what will it take to beat a E46 M3 (besdies TT/SC)?? sorry, newbi here!
Well, you can always rebuilt the engine, have more displacement, higher compresion pistions, tintium valve(whatever that is), retiners, port and polish the "head"......you might able to get enough power out, but its very very costly and you can throw the reliability out of window too. simple bolt-ons will not do. maybe NOS?

C6 vett is hot and all, and sure performs better than anything in its price range, but afterall, its still a chevy..hmmm... plus, insurance is gonna be a b!tch (im 23).
many people think M3 is over priced cuz its not as fast as it should be for 50+k or whatever, but Gettaluvr said it best..its not really over priced if u consider its a BMW, its still faster than most on the road, and its luxury.... i always consider the M3 as the total package car... great sports car with luxury sedan interior and it handles with the best of them.
with all that said, sounds like i should just get a M3 right..haha...but again, the cost of all things to own on top of its price..its gonna be a b!tch too. thats why i thought bout the G...its not a M3, but i always think of it as a cheaper alternitive to the M3..where its got great performance and luxury for its money, just like M3 is...obey G is somewhat slower and the quality of parts used may not be up to BMW standard (not talking bout reliability, since many people comaplain bout both cars..) a good example be paint used and such. just the pain itself cost alotta money...thats one of the biggest issues so many Z and G owners complain about.
as for mods, if i do wanna go faster than M3 or most people on the road, FI is the way to go. but then when you consider the resale value, warranty, insurance (or lack of with all the mods...unless u wanna report everything to them..lol), and so on... the cost of the car may be HIGHER than a M3 ...cuz all the mods wont translate into good resale value, in fact, it may just decrease the value... so thats also one big problem i should consider.
sigh.. so now im kinda back to square one again.. when are they ever gonna introduce the new supra with a price thats affordable?
thanks for all ur suggestions tho... been great and it sure is a helpful site. will stick around and let uall know sup when the time comes to getting one of them

one question i have is that a new 05 G coupe 6 speed is gonna be costing around 40K+ right? now, if u put in mods or FI, the cost of it will actually be MORE than a M3... u can get a M3 between 45 to 50K... just a thought.
whats a new 6 speed G coup costing these days anyways? seems like people are paying some big bux for them!!

To beat a BMW M3 on the drag strip in your slightly modded G35 you would first have to bribe an owner of an M3 to waist their gas, AND then have a butt Naked Pam Anderson stand right in front of the M3, with you wearing horse blinders. Then you would have a fair chance to win.
Have you considered a 5-6 yr old Porsche Carerra? It has back seats albeit tiny. You have your luxury and speed. So it's not brand new... so what? Even a 1999 or 2000 Carrera (if well maintained) is still a sweet car. And it should edge out an M3 in the qtr. Insurance will still be high as well as service costs, but anymore than that and you're asking for the impossible.

Speaking of cost... Try having a BMW dealer come down from MSRP on an M3. At least the G35 is not the "racer" version of a standard model. It IS the standard model. I know I paid reasonably less than MSRP for mine and others here have posted the same. Get one for $35K (sans Nav and satellite radio), spend about $12K on FI and a few other goodies and you'll still come out better. Sure you lose the warranty, but you'll also save on insurance premiums since the insurance company rating symbol on a G35 is far lower than that of an M3.
These are the exact SAME two cars I was on the fence about. The fact of the matter was that an 02 M3 was the same price as a brand NEW G35. I gave up some performance for the money savings and personally, I like the look of the G more. I think it's sleeker looking, while still integrating in some class like the Bimmer.
I see so many people on here talking about adding NOS to their cars. You want to talk about voiding a warranty AND possibly blowing the intake plenium off your engine. Go for it. But I have PERSONALLY seen 3 cars blow up because of NOS. With the G having 10.3 compression, I would strongly advise against adding NOS to these cars.
I would tell you to get a G, save some money, still have the performance and sporty driving (they DO have nice handling) and you'll get a bit better gas milage which is nice with gas prices.
To beat the M3? Do a TT or single turbo kit and do it RIGHT. Have the pistons changed to 8.5:1 AT LEAST. Have the manifold and heads machined to open them up and have a custom exhaust system done. You're prolly looking at at least 15K, but if you do it right, you can run some high boost numbers and easily have 650rwhp. This is the direction I'm heading in, but I want to get a couple of years out of that damn warranty I paid for before I go messing with the engine. I mean common, there are TONS of single turbo Supras out there with 3.2L V6s, low compression STOCK pistons and bottom end, and the same tranny the G35 has (manual) with 800+ rwhp. It can be done, start saving just like I am!

You guys act like the M3 is sooooo much faster than the G. Its got 35 more HP than a stock 2005 6mt, peak power is 1500RPM higher in its powerband and it only weighs about 110lbs less than a 2k5 6mt. So it doesnt have that much more of an advantage. So if you get a guy that doesnt really know how to shift, or if he weights like 400lbs (
), a G could get in front. If you lighten up the car, spare tire, jack, back seat top, and bottom if you really want to win, hell, passenger seat prolly would take off 150lbs, then I think it is definately possible with a few mods that actually give horsepower and not just make noise.

u can do the esprit high compression kit. it boost the car to about 345RWHP NA.
get alot of CF parts, remove the seats and put some cf buckets in. make the car as light weight as possible, should be able to beat a M3 easily.
but for the amount u need to build a 340HP NA engine, u might as well just turbo charge the VQ and get low compression kit to handle more boost.

To those who have driven both cars: How's the "pull" seat of your pants-wise in the G compared to the M? I drove an M extensively yesterday; loved the instant response and the wave of power that comes even when the pedal isn't to the floor.

That's good and probably true too.
Who cares about beating an M3.....the G35 is a fast car as is. A car is a car, you buy it cause you like it and don't mind driving it everyday. Its not like you race an M3 EVERYTIME you hop in your car, so its not worth the money to mod if you still don't end up quicker then the M. Going F/I on a new G, you might as well have bought the M...
A car is a car, period.
