depends on the driver. i own both, and stock for stock, the driver makes all the difference. mine is modified, so mine feels faster, although i haven't run the G hard yet since i'm still in the break-in period.
Why would you race such a beautiful car and risk damaging it or worse? I'd rather cruise around slowly and show off my car

i owned a 97 4door cosmo m3, it treated me so well during college. Sadly when i brought the G home and parked them side by side and drove them back to back. The G and the m3 are very similar, performance wise but the g made the m3 look like @#%$. The G is so damn sexy. On the other hand the M3 evoked more confidence in the twisties than the G.

NO! A stock (1996 or later) E36 M3 will dyno ~210rwhp and ~210rwtp and a stock 2005 G35 will dyno ~ 233rwhp and ~229 rwtq.
Both drivers being equal the G will win EVERY TIME!!!
BTW, just about 10 days ago I dynoed a 1997 E36 M3 with 3 dinan mods and he was about 30 rwhp and 25 rwtq lower than me on the same dyno on the same day.

Uh, correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't an E36 weigh about 300 pounds less than our G's? That will more than negate a 20 hp difference. They are almost identical in terms of straight-line performance.

curb weight on a 95 m3 is 3180, so 332 pounds less. i'd take 300 pound difference vs 20-30 hp difference any day. i own both, and the m3 feels faster and i've tracked mine under 14 secs a few times in the past.
Car and driver 1995 clocked the 95 M3 as follows:
0-60 5.3 sec (BMW claims 6.1)
1/4 14.3 sec (BMW claims 14.8)
Top speed limited 137 MPH - it'll top out around 150 if you remove the top speed limiter.
That's all subjective, but it'll give you an idea where you fare.
