How useful is the NAVI
Since my car is badly damaged, I am looking into a trade in. How useful is the stock navigation system? Does it prevent you from getting lost? Other words, are the directions good? Are the directions easy to follow? last thing... is it worth the $2000?
Currently, I use mapquest and I print out direcitions if I need it. It ticks me off when I get lost with bad directions.

I'm glad I got the Navigation unit, and I think it was worth the money, but if you use your car primarily for just commuting or driving in familiar areas and seldom take your car on road trips, it won't be useful. The directions are very good in general, but not 100% perfect in all areas.
My only complaint about it is the crappy joystick menu navigation system. For $2k, and in this kind of a car, it should be a touchscreen. The joystick is lame and a PITA.

If you plan ahead on getting a nav get the factory nav. You get the fuel economy, dist to empty, oil change timers, and a few other little things. You can't get those in an aftermarket. The joystick is only a pain when you enter addresses otherwise its fine, you get used to it...
The nav will add value to your car so when you sell it you will at least get 1k to 1.5k back for it. When you go out of town the nav in invaluable, but I found day to day I don't use it much. I got it mainly because I love how it looks in the car; it definitely adds a "wow" factor. I'm very happy I spent the extra money to get it, I would have really regreted not having it.
I didn't need the Navi since I'm a Transportation Engineer who has the US highway system committed to memory, but the G I wanted had it and the dealer sold me the car for less than two other dealers I was dealing with were wanting for the same car without the Navi. It's a cool feature and I'm glad I have it, especially since I have a PlayStation2 connected to it so I can watch DVD's and play games. Chicks dig the Navi!

I'm with gspotter.. no need for nav as I've lived in my area for 30 years now.. but it is cool. The best use of the nav I can think of is as a very cool LCD monitor location. The motorized lift is slick. So if you want to integrate a rear cam, dvd, ps2 (why?!) then this is a great lcd panel to have.
The NAV software is eh, so so. Its circa 2000 in quality with a sprinkle of 2003 (bird view) thrown in. The joystick interface is inexcusable and horrible to work with. the safety system disengages most entry while in motion and the graphics, well - plain suk.
That having been said, if you have 2k burning a hole in your pocket and you aren't getting a special deal with it already installed, skip it. Fork over $500 for the *** kit for 2din, then get yourself a Pioneer Avic D1. It's an in-dash, touch screen system that is the latest tech. Sadly - only pioneer does this right now. Basically by getting road sensor data from XM satellites, it displays realtime traffic speeds and shows you real ETA time. Magic black magic.
I'd love to put that in, but it'll have to wait. Maybe down the road Pioneer will make just a tune rmodule that I'll be able to interface to the cool $2k screen

So if it adds 1K to the value of the car, you still lost out 1k more than someone who didnt get it. I dont think thats proper justification. Otherwise the other reasons seem good though. But i think the aftermarket nav is a better option, it is touch screen and much more versatile and customizable. Form what i recall installed it was 2.5K. And it looked stock.
It works very well when it comes to driving on a highway or something. If you're looking to get in detail when it comes to street by street, the NAVI will probably get you there eventually but I end up just going my own way and I have no idea about where the NAVI wants to take me.
I'm glad I got mine with it. I find it very useful
I would have gotten lost many times without it. Even if I knew my way around, when I'm on a long trip, it tells me how many miles I have left until getting there. Also, the fuel economy and maintanance reminders are pretty cool.

I think all navi is not worth the price. Yeah it is cool, but is it REALLY REALLY necessay. Most cell phones have information, and there is always the good ol phone book or 7-11.
I mean c mon how many times will you really need this feature? one a year?
