My father bought an extended warranty for his Maxima from another company that went bankrupt after 1 year.

I'm going to buy one right before the basic warranty runs out. Lets face it, the G is not going to be a cheap care to own out of warranty. Axles, window motors, body control unit, AC compressors.... all somewhat common and repeated problems. Just had my AC replaced. It would be easy to drop $1000 on these repairs. As long as the extended warranty actually covers those things, I'll get it. Fairly sure it doesnt cover the crappy Head unit tho.

If you are talking of buying the "Elite Infiniti Extended Protection Plan," you can not buy it at the expiration of the basic warranty. See the notes at the bottom of the page I cited giving Dealer Cost for this package.

No, I was referring to the certified preowned type warranty. I will have to read the fine print to see if it's really going to cover the things I'm worried about. I talked to Grubbs briefly about doing this. Although, I have my doubts about coverage on electronics. I've had the Nissan Gold Plus warranty and they had an exclusion list a mile long.

AFtermarket parts do not necessarily void warranty unless they can prove that the aftermarket part caused the problem. So they cant refuse to fix your window motor just for having a popcharger. Check out the sema website for more info.

Some people dont like to have uncertainities and would rather hedge against it by buying the extended warranty and some people dont care. And I dont know about "its pretty much no good"....like I said I got my moneys worth and then some on my last car.
This is pretty good summary. It really is up to how risk adverse you are, but remember the more risk you hedge away, the more it costs you in the long run. I would suggest that almost no one is is so risk adverse that they should spend $1500 now because they think that they are going to have to outlay $2000 in repairs over the next 2 or 3 years. Unless you think your going to pay out 2x more than the extended warranty cost, I wouldn't even think about purchasing one.

Instead, put the $1500 in a mutual fund and at the end of 3 years you will probably have $2000. If your lucky, you only had $500 in repairs and you have $1500 in your pocket. If your not lucky, you'll break even. I bet there are many more people on average that end up in the "spend $500 in repairs" group. I'm don't have an MBA or anything, but a hedge cost you more than 10% of what you hedging against, it's considered a bad deal? $1500 to cover $2000 would be like a 75% hedge so even if its a 50% chance of happening it's a bad bet.

Especially since the insurance companies only hold back $250/contract for a reserve. This number isn't a guess, I know for a fact this is the reserve for a large insurance company in the US that you've heard of and is a hosehold name. Insurance companies don't guess on their researve numbers either, if they miss the researve numbers very very bad things happen. They don't just dip into the general account, people start getting fired.

well once again, i think you should get a new car when you have tons of problems (even if those problems are covered by extended warranty)
IMO, it is waste of money but like for old people, who dont wanna get a headache for some problems, i think they might need it? i dont know

extended warranty is definitely something you should bargain on the pricing. I used to have a Honda Accord Coupe 99'. The dealor sold me the 7yrs/100k miles extended warranty for half of original $1500 = $750. To me, extended warranty is something like insurance. If you have extra money, you should go for it. Because it not only ensures infiniti's warranty on most parts for 7 years and it also can add to your resale value (you can sell to private party with the extended warranty).

My Accord had its alternator died and my tranny completely messed up. If I had not bought extended warranty, I would have paid almost 3000 to fix it. So, for me it was worth it =)

I will talk with more than one dealorships and see whether they will honor my warranty if I change header/exhaust/intake, etc, and have them written down on paper. If so, I definitely will purchase the ext. warranty in very near future -)

This is true but sometimes it is not as easy as that. Read the thread below. This guy blew his n/a motor and the dealer voided his warranty. These are his mods.

injen true dual catback
helix test pipes
jwt pop charger
crawford plenum(black)
top speed headers
JWT lightweight flywheel

I could not see keeping a car for more than 5 years so the extended warranty is not for me.

I didn't get one. I seldom get extended warranties on cars....it's pointless for me
cause I mod cars and the longest I keep is about 5 years anyways. If there's
significant problems on a brand new car, I would just report it as a lemon and
get a replacement.

Well i wouldnt be surprised, he has parts that are directly related to the engine or ithat indirectly affect the engine. Like I said they cant void your warranty on UNRELATED parts like the popcharger and window motor example.
