Dont forget it all comes down to the driver. An experienced shifter on a 6MT will beat a 5AT off the line by a little bit. Somoene who doesent know how to shift, or messes up under the pressure can get an even slower speed off the line than the 5AT.

I cant tell you how many times I've raced people in EVOs and STis and such with my 5AT, cars that could and should have wrecked me off the line, but I beat them beacuse they messed up or werent good shifters, and thats the only excuse being that those two cars are only made in manuals.

Honestly, I felt the G35 was better suited with a 5AT transmission, expecially where I live in NJ with traffic, and when I go to NYC where I wouldnt dream of driving a manual. I have two other manual cars in the driveway if I want to drive them, but I still chose my G.

Everone should have a cluch..... theres sooo much u could do wit it.... but if u dont want tha hassle then dont get it.... racing much? dont forget tickets=points points=highter insurance rates, higher insurance rates=less money in your pocket you decide..... dont race around its dangerous...
***6mt's are for those who wear their cars not drive them***

P.s. If ur a car enthusiast then get the stick its alot of fun

Also, I do not think you can say that the majority of 6MT owners are experiencing problems and that the transmission is not as reliable as the 5AT. This is a message board on the internet which is a small population to begin with. A lot of people post only when they have problems. You would need a much larger sample of G owners and some hard statistics to backup that claim
Read my post. I said do a thread search and read. If you do a search HERE of problems with the 6MT and then a search of problems with the 5AT one column will be very long and the other will be vacant.

I have read at least two dozen threads about 6MT tranny failures, clutch problems, howling noises, vibration, etc. I've read nothing but praise for the 5AT. Agree, this is a small sample of owners, but the complaints about each tranny are likely representative of percentages in the fleet of G35s out there.

I didn't say THE MAJORITY of owners had problems. Where did you get that?

In most cases, manual transmissions last a lot longer than automatics, and the cost to replace a clutch and maintain a manual transmission pails in comparison of the cost to replace and maintain an automatic transmission.
I've never owned a manual that didn't need adjustment, parts replacement, or service to keep it in tune. I've also never owned an auto that had to have more than a fluid flush and fill which I can do myself in minutes. Don't know what kind of autos you've owned - mine have been bulletproof.

usually the auto's actually weigh more than a 6mt, though I am not sure about the G's but the auto puts down less power to the wheels.

lol... get the car because you love driving it and being in it.
not because you want to beat other cars.
There will always be a "lil 4-cylinder honda" who will destroy you.

I've gotten killed by a lil honda civic hatchback and a CRX pretty damn bad.

It's not about being better.
It's about being happy with what you have.
and personally, I'm damn happy with it. lots of torque anywhere I want it.
looks great, is comfortable, MP3 player, navi(quirky but works).

Just test drive a 6MT and a 5AT, then decide. I took the 5AT myself because the street performance difference beetween the two were minimal. Plus my wife can't drive stick ... Just go with what feels right for you.

Thanks for great opinions guys. I appreciate every single one of them.

I still do want to know what average time for 5AT G35 is though.
Can anyone give me a slightly more details on that?
[not just mid 14s, but maybe more specific like "14.3~14.5 average"]

Exactly. Its about being happy with what I have, but I wouldn't be so happy
when I spent 35g on a g35, and civic SI comes out of nowhere and just
zoom out on me.

True, there always will be faster cars, but I was being very general.
All I was asking for was "some punch out of the box".
This might sound very dull, but if g35 auto isn't even capable of
mid 14s stock, I really want to spend a few more and get used M3.

G35 looks, RWD configuration, interior, options, colors, etc etc,
it all looks perfect to me. Even performance specs on "papers" look great.
All I crave for this car is its straight line performance status, which really,
might sound worthless to somebody, but I bet there are few others
out there who knows what Im talking about. There are few "occasions" where
you just have to stay in front of Car-X when you are driving these days.

If you go read in the racing forum you'll find times posted for the 05 5AT.

Automatic equipped cars lose more power through the drivetrain due to the torque converter. Add this to the additional time it takes for the transmission to shift gears in comparison to a MT results in slower performance.

EDIT: For spelling.

Agree with this, provided the driver knows how to launch and shift the car in a 'challenging' situation.

While a good driver (in reality - not in his mind) may be able to run faster times in the 6MT (still questionable when using the AVERAGE driver AFAIK) I'd wager the times will be more consistent in the 5AT.
