05 g35 stock, exhaust tips turning black

I figure this is abnormal, the exhaust tips on the car have gotten really dark with very little use. Then today, i touched the bottom part of exhaust tip with my finger and there was a black oily substance on the exhaust. What baffles me is, my car is stock, (as far as i know, i bought it with 3k miles on it), and it seems like its running rich somehow? Is this normal? This combined with my strangely acting tach needle is starting to worry me.

hopefully i'm just being a moron

thanks guys

buy some mother mag & aluminum polish, it will make your tips look brand new.

Mother's pollish is one of the BEST out there! Its just cream that you use to hand buff on the areas you want to clean... and it turns nice and shiney in seconds of buffing!

You may be being a moron, but not in this case. LOL

Seriously, I don't think this is a question of how to clean the tips, it's a question of why are they so black and oily to begin with.

A previous post talked about soot and the blackening of the exhaust tips. I have minimal to NO blacking, but I don't redline my car on a daily basis either.

The general consensus in the other thread was if you drive like a granny, you won't have soot. If you drive like a "man" then the soot is normal.

I flogged my Maxima within an inch of its life and didn't have soot. My sedan gets a workout (but not nearly like the Maxima) and soot is non-existant. I'm at about 2500 miles.

My tach needle is smooth (it's an auto) but I don't know if the two things are related in your case.

If it were me, I'd see the dealer. Better safe than sorry.

Black exhaust

I stopped worrying about mine after I found out that other G35 coupes have the same black stuff on the tail pipes. My car runs like a champ and no check engine light is on, other than a little shake here and there when idling, so I'm fine. I always thought you have to modify the car by headers or high flow cat to blow black stuff out the back, but I think our coupe exhaust is already high performance, hence the louder than usual stock sound. But since you have other problems too, I would go to the dealer and mention them all and see what they say.
Good luck

Short trips and limit useage will do that. After a long hwy run you'll see that the tips are a lot cleaner.

I get the same thing on my exhaust, just use regular car wash soap and it disapears, completely normal. As far as cleaning, treat the exhaust tips as your would your wheels (NO WHEEL CLEANER THOUGH!)
