Opinions on the coupe in winter
Opinions on the coupe in winter
Hey guys
I am seriuosly thinking about this car for myself but there is one major issue. The issue is I live in Canada and we get a lot of snow.
I really dont want to spend this kind of money for a car that I can only drive 7 months of the year.
Is it possible to drive this car in winter conditions?
Does anyone plan on driving their coupe in winter conditions this year? Or did you last year?
If I buy some quality winter tires will I make it through the winter?
Thanks for the input guys.
Again.....LUV THE G

Well I dont' have any problems in the Winter time over here as regards to weather conditions... Probably because I'm in So Cali.. and temperatures drop to the low 60's some days but at around that weather the car feels strong. Not sure about snow though.. Only place I've seen snow was on tv... but when temperatures drop to the low 50 to 60's the car feels real solid...

Yes, you will be just fine with a set of winter tires.
If you search this forum as far back as 6 months ago, then you will find some quality posts regarding this very topic, everyone seemed to agree that winter driving with winter tires provided more than sufficient traction. Just dont drive it in the snow w/ the stock michelon summer tires.
You will lose control and get into an accident, guaranteed.

Re: Opinions on the coupe in winter
I bought a set of Alpin a day after getting the G in March 03. I travel over 18 states from the Dakotas to Florida. The winter tires are great. I never worried about the road except when the cruise is set and I pass under a bridge. The ice that often forms there would at times slide the rearend out. I eliminated the problem by not using the cruise when ice was present. A side benefit is that the tires last much longer than the sports. I finaly changed my winters for the summers at 13000 miles and the winters are still great. I want to get a set of rims for either the winters or for the summers but have been unable to find a set that is resonable and sized right.
Good Luck.

Did you put the Alpins on the OEM 18s? If so what sizes did you go with?
I am trying to decide what to do this fall. This past winter was a disaster with the OEM Pilots. Don't even try it!

Re: Opinions on the coupe in winter
I got my coupe in february, lve in New York. Havent gotten winters for the past winter, so I had to live it at home quite often throughout the last 2 months of winter. I did take it out when there was snow on my mischelin sports, but .... it is terrible!!!! they dont have any traction at all with even traces of snow. I will definatelly get a set of new rims and winter tires for the next winter .... or I'll be talking the bus a lot, hehehe.

I keep the VDC ON. I would not turn it off. The rearend is light and under moderate throttle will let lose. The VDC nearly eliminates this. I use Alpin 235X40(or 45 don't recall and the tires are in storage)X18. Yes I am using the stock 18's for now.

Re: Opinions on the coupe in winter
I've always used weights in my previous rwd cars and traction was greatly improved. I found that 3, maybe 4 45lb weight plates are easiest way to add some weight when you need it...
Re: Opinions on the coupe in winter
Gnome -- whoever told you to turn the VDC off in the snow is insane. MAYBE you turn it off if you are stuck and trying to get out, but for regular driving you definitely want to keep it ON!! Somebody posted a link to a G35 coupe test showing the effect of VDC in snow -- it was quite a graphic display of the VDC's effectiveness. Maybe a search will turn it up.
