I definately treat it like I'm paying for it
, but I do agree with the MotoMan (?) method to some extent.
My 6MT rolled off the delivery truck with 13 miles on it. Agreeing that seating the rings happens early and requires some load, I've driven accordingly... ...but with responsibility.
I still haven't had her over 4500rpm and have otherwise held her shifts to below 4000rpm most of the time. However, when I'm accelerating in 2nd or higher (still taking it easy on the clutch), I do put the pedal to the floor to increase the load on the engine. I'll also run it a gear higher than needed sometimes to achieve the same effect.
At 40 miles, the G seems to be loving it. It's pulling stronger each time I drive it. I'm not saying that the MotoMan method is completely safe, but you can take the basics and apply them yourself with a bit more precaution. The contention that a load on the engine creates the desired pressure above the rings, thus giving them the resistance needed to set properly, is sound reasoning. What's more, my 6MT seems to have agreed.
