Stronger transmission: 5AT or 6MT?
Stronger transmission: 5AT or 6MT?
With the time the G has been out, which transmission would you perceive is the strongest transmission that would have the least problems in the long run?
Also, Which will take modifications and more power better?
This is coming into consideration for me as I am debating between AT and MT when ordering my '06 G.
Also, if any known problems with either transmission, please list them.
THANKS!!

I'm new to the G, but to give you an idea about the AT, from what I've read it is the same one that they use on the new M45 which has a V8 and puts out over 340 lb-ft. of torque.

As regards performance the difference is marginal at best. The MT will untimately respond to most mods better much of which depends on what mods you are getting. If you are gettig a high stall TC well then of course the AT will respond to that better
. Ground wires normally have a more noticeable effect on the AT. Some mods that work for the MT may not work so well on the AT such as some breathing mods- which reduce low end power but increases high end. When you reduce the low end torque on the AT you may hinder the performance even if you gain up top. You can't slip the clutch in the AT to regain the low end power that is lost. There are a few breathing mods out there that increase power accross the power band which in my opinion are the better mods for the AT.
The AT transmission as regards durability is top notch. I have only heard of a couple of problems. The 6MT has had a few issues but I don't know that it would constitute it being deemed unreliable.

I would like to know if the G shares its 5AT with the M45, can anyone back this up?

I can't speak on the 5AT, but the 6MT can take FI with no problems. I've heard oem clutch is only rated for about 325-350 rwhp maybe less, but you can upgrade the clutch/flywheel. I've never heard of anyone breaking an OEM 6mt tranny due to increased power and some guys are pushing over 400 rwhp. The syncro issue is not related to extra power.
