almost all the gas stations in cali have only up to 91 octane...shell included. at least, that's what i've seen in the l.a. area, s.f. bay area, sac area, and san diego.

I've had good results with our Petro-Can (Canadian) gas which has 'techron'. I'd recommend that to anyone. In the U.S. you have a fuel with techron -- is it Chevron?? not sure but I like this gas with techron and it's always treated me well.
Our gas, save for Sunoco, is 91 Octane but it's been ok in my engines.

Well I know I get sunoco gas, considering sj has a massive sunoco refinery...

but yes alot of gas comes from the same place, I just like knowing by choosing sunoco I'm not helping the governements of countries that view us as enemies...

About 4-5 years ago the premium octain was 94 here in Cali, it all changed when gas prices started to go threw the roof and now 91 is our premium.

Your statement is not correct. We have 91 because of CA's stupid re-oxygenation reformulation that not only makes our gas more expensive to refine, but less powerful. All in the name of exhaust pollution, supposedly, but I've heard it doesn't help.

The 3L VQ works better on 93 than 91. I used to live in so-cal, moved to the midwest for grad school and then moved back to so-cal for work. I felt a noticeable difference in my 3.0L VQ with the 93 over the 91. I don't know if the 3.5L is as sensitive.
