Re: Learn How to Drive Stick Just to get a 6MT?

I was fortunate enough to grow up on a stick-shift... and then went to automatic for my 2nd car and now i'm back to 6MT for the G35C... and i never regret it... stick is superior to automatic =P imho haha... and i will NEVER go back to automatic =P

Re: Learn How to Drive Stick Just to get a 6MT?

I was in same situation, I grew up with a 4runner and it was auto, but after it got totalled and insurance gave me some cash I wanted car. I waited and saved up, saw the car of my dreams(for the slow ones out there G35 coupe), and just had to have it and I knew I had to get 6speed. I did learned first day, my dad took me out to these back roads drove it for like an hour got used to clutch and what not and it is well worth it. Its funny though, my sisters friend was in the car and she asked "why did you get a stick shift, it seems more of a hassle then anything else." luckily we had just started to make a turn and I was easing it into first about 2 grand and floored it, torque kicked in, her head went flying back, she loved it and I said "thats why." It so much funner definitly go with manual, someone posted a quote on here awhile back, "would you rather drive or steer." sums everything up right there. Good luck.

"would you rather drive or steer" - total BS because everyone knows that DRIVING IS ABOUT HANDLING THE WHEEL, NOT THE STICK

Not heavy traffic AND it's not a daily driver? Definitely go stick. I'd find another car to learn on first though. Rent if you can, although they're really tough to find with a stick. Maybe you can convince your parents to get a really short term lease on something.

I have the 5AT because I need to get 30-50 miles out of the city before a stick becomes fun to drive. Even with the AT, it's a daily struggle not to violently murder my fellow Bostonians. There's just too many cars on the road, and most are piloted by our famously bad drivers.

Re: Learn How to Drive Stick Just to get a 6MT?

I would agree that learning on this car is tougher than most. I knew enough about driving stick to get by, but I never owned one before my G. I have had a few people that have owned manuals drive it and they have almost unanimously agreed that its not the easiest to drive. That being said, I definetly would argue that if your going to buy this car, you have to get manual.

Yeah, what is drive by wire?

And does anyone else think that 1st gear redlines to quickly, or is this just my lack of experiance with a manual sports car? I feel like another 5 mph would make daily driving more comfortable.

drive my wire simply means that instead of a direct linkage between the gas pedal and the engine throttle control there is now a sensor at the pedal that senses pedal movement and then sends that info "by wire" or electronically to the engine's throttle control.

Yeah a bit more range in 1st would make daily driving a bit easier but I pretty much stay in 2nd unless I come to a complete stop.

That super-short 1st gear is what gives us so much off-the-line power since it shoots up the revs into the 4k+ powerband so quick.

That is what I suspected, and when I am getting on it I do appreciate the fact that I am within tire chirping speed in no time!
