The $8000.00 fender bender

I hit the back of an FX35 last week at about 20mph and got my estimate back today. I knew it wasn't going to be cheap, but I never expected it to be $8000 and included a 4 page font 10 list of replacement parts. MY airbags thankfully didn't deploy. Glad I have insurance. I wanted to try and get a body kit out of this, but our front bumpers are only about $350. I didn't think the damage was going to be this severe as the impact was not that hard.

Good luck with repairs, and yes , good thing for insurance.

I will not get a cent out of this, I contacted my insurance and asked about putting aftermarket parts on the car, they would cover up to the cost of OEM parts + Labor, so I was going to try and put on some aftermarket parts. I had Philips ulticon 6000k bulbs on (only 2 weeks old) and they both were shattered. I also took out the cooling system, A/C, etc. pretty much everything infront of the engine has to be replaced. I'm glad that there is no actual engine damage. I'm now going to be without my G for another 10-14 days

I wouldn't say our bumpers are worthless, it did the job of obsorbing the impact, instead of my neck and back. Even though I love my car like a family member, I'd rather wreck the car than my body.

I'm losing 250 on my deductable and can't wait to see my next insurance statement.

Oh yeah, the FX35 had scratches on his bumper and I bent one of his exhaust pipes, but his trailer hitch is what took out most of the front end of my car.

I was merging on to the freeway and had about a 2 car length gap between me an the FX, I looked over my right should to check the gigantic blind spot that the coupe has and when I turned my head back, I was about 2 feet from his car and slammed the brakes but it was way too late and sat as far back in my seat as possible waiting to get slammed in the face by my airbag, which fortunately didn't deploy. He was on the cell phone and my theory is that he wasn't paying attention and panic braked because I turned my head for a split second and he was not breaking when I turned my head. Argh!!

It was interesting seeing the front end of the car "explode" sending pieces of plastic every where.

350 for our bumper? My dealer told me 800 for a new bumper.

That's probably painted and installed and maybe dealer mark up. The parts list shows the initial oem bumper cost at being $350.

I heard somewhere - maybe an urban legend - that a person talking on their cell phone, who get into an auto accident - it's their fault. Even trumps the fact you rear-ended him. I'm no lawyer, so don't take my word for it. You might want to check with your insurance company. If you or the other driver mentioned the cell phone use and it's in the police report, you're golden. If not - the cell-phone use can be obtained w/ a court order. Again, something more appropriate for your agent to follow up on. Benefit for you - if it's the other guy's fault your insurance wan't be impacted quite so much.

I know CA has a blanket law that if you are doing anything (eating, smoking, cell phone, etc) while you are driving, and are considered "unsafe" you can be cited. I'm not sure if this applies to the accident though, but I will look into it. Thanks

jtrudeau, if you want a body kit you should talk to the body shop and see if they can hook you up with one. if you ask the insurance company, of course they will tell you that you can only get OEM parts.

I'm really surprised your airbag didn't go off. 20 MPH is not that light of a collision, assuming the car you hit was completely stopped.
