check out my feathered tires..,, stupid nissan

ok so I took my car in for tire feathering in the front but they said oh it's normal for this car because of the agressive setting and told me I needed new tires. SCREW THAT! camber ALONE wouldn't do this. If it was camber alone it would wear evenly. NOT LIKE THIS! ALL uneven! (see below) anyways, they were nice enough to align my car and told me the alignment was already good but get this, they didn't show the BEFORE numbers of the TOE setting. They only showed the AFTER numbers. I think they're hiding that it was THEIR fault for the poor toe setting from before...

anyways, I went to a tire place because the howling and thumping of the tires was unbearable slowing down at a stop. So I had them rotate my front tires from side to side by dismounting it and mounting the tire to the other side. NO MORE NOISE.. i just hope my alignment specs are up to par

Are my settings good?

here's my alignment sheet:

here's my front driver side tire before it was switched over to the other side:

here's the passenger tire now on the driver side.. feathering!!

so those of you that have loud tires coming to a stop, CHECK IT. and check the alignment! I would recommend tire rotation by dismounting them.

edit: i attached the pictures because photobucket sucks sometimes.....

Um, arn't these tires directional... I understood they were, and if that is the case you don't want to switch sides because they are only meant to rotate on way.

Yes you are right that they are directional. However, the poster stated he dismounted the tires from the rims and remounted them opposite of each other. Therefore, the tires are still rotating as should, but with the once inside face of the tire now on the outside, or vice versa if you would like.

Assuming the specified ranges in your sheet are correct, then it looks like everything is within range? I'm not sure what it is I'm looking for in the pic you say has feathering, can you circle it?

it's the uneven wear of the inside blocks of the tire.. look how it's not a smooth wear.. some parts on the inside is worn down more than other blocks of the tire...

The After looks within range on the front. The rear camber could've
been closer to each other though...I usually have them redo it if the
camber is off more than 0.2 left/right, yours is off by 0.4. regardless,
the alignment if based on toe looks pretty good, caster looks good too.

You're right though, camber alone would not wear out the inside tread
like that unless you put 20k miles or racked up on highway miles.

If you bother to measure the camber changes in a turn [as the wheels turn away from srtraight ahead] you will see the camber increase due to the high levels of caster and built in Camber gain.

Over the last 15 years every directional tire [on every car brand Lexus, Infiniti, BMW, MB, Ferrari] I seen [a few hundred thousand] has heel toe feathering ---- a function of soft fast wearing compound, directional blocks, tire block squirm, and turning camber gain.

When you run directionals [COSTS] comes with the territory-----tire maintenance: flipping on rims and rotation every 3-6,000 miles......noise increases after 6,000 miles

sure, but not on the shoulder like that. It would be more spread out from around
3/4th of the width of the tire to the inner shoulder.

Mine looked exactly like this as well. At about 12k miles I also had them "rotate" (wheel swap) the front tires for me. It helped very much with tire roar, and also spread out the wear. At 24k miles I replaced all four and had the car re-aligned. We'll see how they wear this time around. I was also told that this is normal due to the aggressive handling numbers they were trying to achieve...

Same with mine, im actually embarassed to let someone ride in my G because of the howling. At first i thought the wheel bearings were wearing out, but after a trip to service, they said no its because of "flat spots" on the michelans and that I would have to take it up with them. Michelan didn't do too much for me, they claimed that the tires are wearing unevenly because of alignment issues with the car. Im at about 22k now and will just wear these out as long as I can i suppose.

My brother went thru the same thing as you recently with his coupe. New tires and a realignement was the answer and now his ride is quiet.
The compression rods were suspect, but they found nothing wrong there.
