This dyno was done a couple of months ago, but I asked ryan (98intrigue) to send me his stock dyno so that I could compare it to my stock dyno. Unfortunately our torque graph was all messed up as I've heard the 05 produces less torque but has a flatter torque band. The 04's rwhp's band seems to actually be better than the 05's.




Now isn't this info more usefull than all the garbage we get on the g35driver boards as of late.........ie., "does your car squeak", "what is a Z tube?"...lol

 

to do this you'll need an 04 stock and 05 stock both MT or AT and runned on the same day so temp doesnt effect anything

That's EXACTLY what you have. Two bone stock 6mt coupes! The 2004 has the stock 18" wheels, the 2005 has the stock 19" wheels, both cars were dynoed on the same dyno on the same day within a short time of each other, both drivers had 3 pulls and have posted their best runs.

What more can you ask for?

Also, the one with the higher rpms at redline would obviously be the 2005.

 

So it's safe to say that an '04 is clearly the quicker of the two cars, when equally driven...roughly 10 hp more all the way to very high RPM's, 80 pounds lighter...the case for an '05 will be very difficult, indeed. At highway speeds and above is the ONLY way an '05 will beat an '04, all other things being equal. And even that is not a given.

Really gives credence to the fact that peak horsepower ratings are for bragging rights only. The curve is infinitely more important.

 

Can you show us the graph with RPM's?

And yes, this is more interesting than "what's a Z-tube." But we need more "which color is girlie" talk.

 

Not completely true, we cant see the torque curve, so maybe max torque is overrated too.........possibly the 05 has a better torque curve? In addition ryan and I raced at the track a few times against each other, both stock, and we ran identical times.

I tried to put the rpms but it messes up the graph.

 

When pushed, both cars should be very close. Even though the 04 has a better horsepower curve, the 05s keep pulling after the 04 has shifted. That extra rpm probably makes a bigger difference on the track. In all other situations, the 04 engine is the better choice. More useable horsepower throughout its rev range.

 

I'll want to see the torque curves. One of the biggest problems with the 03-04 VQ is that it begins to run out of breathe at higher rpms. You can clearly see that in the first dyno. The 05 stables off, but doesn't decline like the '04. This means the car is making power until redline, which is not the case for the 04. The extra rpms and horsepower is very useful for racing, but the extra power in the midrange of the 04 is nice too. The torque curves will tell the whole story. It's like moving the lost 10 ft/lbs of the 05 from 4800 to 2500, but that will only be revealed during a dyno. If the 05 offers more torque off the line and stays flat until redline plus the better breathing, I would say the 05 is better off.

 

I believe they programmed the ECU that way on purpose in the 03/04's to decrease the value of running the car to redline every time they race. I remember reading somewhere where the 03 ECU was reprogrammed to take that high RPM "detuning" away, and the car then pulled in a much more linear fashion right up to redline.

Unfortunately, there is no ECU reprogram that I know of which is available for the 04's yet.

 

Thanks Chaz for gathering this type of info and posting it. I have been waiting for someone to post this comparison data so we can see the differences between the model years.

The torque curves will be especially interesting to see.
