Unhappy Help! AC just went out...

Hey all,

Yes I tried doing a search. I noticed that my AC was not as cool as it usually was yesterday and today it's blowing nothing but hot air. I've tried everything with the settings and nothing is working. I have a few questions and you'll have to pardon me if I get the terminology wrong. I believe that the pulley for the compressor is the farthest one on the right, is that correct? If so, I've been told that the compressor runs when you hit the AC button and a clutch engages.

As it stands now the clutch isn't engaging and there is no compressor action going on. If I'm out of refrigerant would the compressor stop running? I've been told that when a system is low on refrigerant you can often see the clutch engaging and disengaging. I'm just wondering if maybe I just need a refill of refrigerant (but that would be odd too since the car is only 2.5 years old) but I don't want to over fill it.

I'll just take it to the dealer. Aargh!

steve are you referring to the AC line issues for those w/ the PC and most other aftermarket CAIs?? Or is this a separate problem all together?? I believe Startertan does have a Z tube/PC but I assumed he wouldve wrapped his AC line....

Yes, I would check that spot first before anything. I just lost one of my lines. I took my car in for a tune and the tunner zip tied my under plastic to my Vortech pipe. When he drove the car it pulled down the plastic and in turn pulled the pipe. That moved mt AC line and rubbed a hole in it. The AC line isnt that much $ its when you run the AC dry that you run into problems.

I thought if he broke the A/C line that it would have sprayed all over his engine bay?
If so, then I'm sure he would have mentioned that.

R134a will turn up as a gas when it is released so you wouldn't know if it had sprayed or not. Just a big hole.

how would you be able to see the gas?? I thought it was invisible unless you stained your refrigerant w/ one of those UV detectors??

Well it seems that everybody was right sort of. I thought that I had sufficiently taken care of the Z Tube issue by bending the restraining bracket...I was wrong.

Went to Pep Boys afterwork and got an R134A measure and charge bottle. I started filling the R134A into the low pressure side and all of a sudden the compressor started to run but the air wasn't getting cold. I kept adding more and more and all of a sudden I heard a hissing sound. Sure enough the clamp for the Z tube rubbed a hole in my AC line. Jeez I'm such a dumb@ss. Oh well, leaving for Seattle on Monday and I won't be back till August. Scheduled an appointment with Jeff at Passport for 8/1 so I'll get it taken care of then.

Thanks for the input guys. Always appreciate it! Happy motoring!
