Is the Performance Tire Package necessary??

Is the Performance Tire package really necessary? I wanted the 18's and the additional titanium trim but I have the chance to buy a coupe without the performance package. I also do not know if the LSD is needed either. Would you buy a coupe without the performance package?? Oh by the way, as you can tell, this will be an automatic.

Re: Is the Performance Tire Package necessary??

I would definately get the package. To me the car is a sports car in the truest definition. So therefore having those performance items is a must. The LSD also is a must as far as I'm concerned. It definately improves the performance. I think the only thing that detracts from the package is the 18's since they are a little noisy and rough riding. Oh well the price you pay for the performance. I'm glad I got the 6MT cause it also comes witht the Brembo braking system. Peace.

Auto's with the Performance Pkg are in short supply right now (due to a shortage of the 18" wheels).. you may have trouble finding one right now.

Re: Is the Performance Tire Package necessary??

I bought it without it, but mostly because that was the car on the lot and I think the "titanium" trim is embarassingly cheap and ugly.

As for the rest:

LSD - I wish I had this and it'd cost far more to add it afterward, but there's some debate over whether the Performance Wheel Package ATs really do get LSD or whether that's a misprint. Your salesperson will tell you that you do regardless, because if he's wrong he can blame the company. Anyone have reliable info on this?

18" wheels - unless these are lighter than the 17" wheels, they're probably slower under most types of driving. But they look better.

Michelin Pilots - These, on the other hand, are far better than the Eagle RSAs on my Coupe's 17" wheels.

Summary: I think the package is a great deal if you can stomach the trim *and* you really do get LSD. If you don't get LSD and the 18"s aren't lighter (or you were getting aftermarket wheels anyway), it's definitely not worth ordering it to save a couple bucks on the tires. If you want the trim, just buy some silver spray paint.

Assuming you actually do get the LSD, I believe that the limited slip in itself would be a great thing to have. My feeling is that especially in Chicago, where the winter is not great, the limited slip would definately be to our advantage.

Definately wait for the 18" wheel package. If it were nav, I'd say screw it, but with the LSD and other perks you get with the sport package, there's no reason to skimp just to get it now. You'll be happier that you waited.

Get it. LSD is worth it. Especially since you're getting an AT model. I think an AT model without it just wouldn't be as much fun. Bad enough we're giving up the fun of a manual (which in So Cal isn't always that fun.) Get it even if you have to wait for a 2004 model - which is worth waiting for. 2nd year cars have 14% fewer bugs than first-year releases. Plus, you can get Twilight Blue.

If you have to ask the question, then you should WAIT.

You'll only kick yourself later if you don't get it.

Re: Is the Performance Tire Package necessary??

I bought a coupe without the performance package. Must admit however that I did tell the dealer I would take the package if he found me a coupe with it.

I like the look of the larger 18" wheels. But now I have read that the 17" Goodyears should get much better milage and will be less expensive to replace than the 18" Michelins. Performance with the 17s is still the best I have had in many years!

Would have liked the LSD too but since I won't be driving in the winter I really won't miss it either.

Bottom line is that, FOR MY TYPE OF DRIVING, I don't miss not having the Performance Package and there are actually a few advantages to not having it.

Re: Is the Performance Tire Package necessary??

Yes get it. The LSD is great, and the advantages are not in the winter, but everytime you put your foot down. Second, IMHO, the car without the Titanium trip looks cheaper. Plus, the 18s are great except you will need a set of winter tires or a second vehicle.

Re: Is the Performance Tire Package necessary??

Let me put it this way...if I had to pick options to strip off my car, the W&T package would probably be last. Try to compare the cost of getting decent 18s, LSD, and Brembos aftermarket and you really see what a bargain it is.
