HI Beams And Flash To Pass

Just picked up a coupe a couple of weeks ago and I want to say this site has been very informative.

I noticed that with the headlights off if I pull back on the turn signal stalk the hi beams Do come on, but the HIDs come on also. I know flashing the HID's shortens their life considerably. Is this normal? I had a BMW 330Ci before and when flashing the hi beams only the hi beams came on, the HIDs stayed off.

I'm hoping it's a problem with the wiring in my car, because if this is the way the engineers designed the lighting system, it doesn't make sense.

you're right- it doesn't make much sense but that's the way it is designed unfortunately. I would imagine one could do some rewiring if they knew how- I'm not sure.

Welcome to the boards BTW

Yeah, the same engineer also probably designed the "Auto" headlight switch that requires you to cycle the HID on and then off as you turn the switch to the Auto mode........Brilliant.....just F'n Brilliant!!!!!

Wow. I'm going to go test this out. It was my understanding that the HID portion of the headlight isn't supposed to turn on just because of that fact.

excactly....

and HID dont wear out fast even if u leave it on. i just block the auto sensor and the car would turn on its light every time i drive the car, and shut off itself when i leave.... i never have to touch the headlights switch.

And what happens when the warranty runs out? I hear that HID bulbs run a couple of bucks more than incandescent bulbs. Plus, it states in the manual that HIDs shouldn't be turned on and off repeateadly.

All I was trying to say is that if the HIDs were linked to the hi-beam switch, that is a poor design because HIDs were never designed to be flashed on and off. Also, Infiniti is contradicting themselves because one one hand they tell you not to flash your HIDs, but on the other hand they connect it to the hi-beam switch. All the other manufacturers have independent circuits/switches for thei HIDs. Even cars that have bi-xenon headlights, they use a mirror/reflector in the back of the projector to facilitate the hi-beam, and that only turns on when the headlights are ON. When flashing to pass (pulling back on the turn stalk) the incandescents are activated, not the HIDs. This is the proper way to wire an HID light cluster. It seems to me that the car was originally designed for halogen headlights and was retrofited with HIDs right before production. I doubt the **** Japanese engineers would design the G35 like this from the beginning.
