Attn. California drivers w/mods
Yeah, didn't have exhaust on my RSX to try to be stealthy but there are a lot of loud a$$ cars around here going nowhere but slow. I do get kinda sick of em. Speaking of photo radar, we have the new red light cams popping up all over here in Roseville now. It sucks because no people are double guessing if they think they can make it or not. They take off and then slam their brakes. Kinda funny to watch em though.

The red light cameras are okay. IMO. They do save lives. I run the light now and then when I don't want to get rear ended. But I don't gun through it. Usually slow right down below speed limit so the camera doesn't click on me. The problem with photo radar is they are always stationed on the safest stretch of roads where a little speed wouldn't matter.
Man I HATE harley's and riced up cars. You an hear them a mile away. But to lose your right to modify your car?! At least they can be more politically correct by claiming to crack down on people with no cats or something.

well....at least we got rims to upgrade.
$5 mil for that? Does that really save more lives? How about giving lessons to people who "really can't drive"
How about go bust some gansters and improve the neighborhood?
First of all, fast is not equal to dangerous. You can have a 60 yr old grandma driving on hwy at 60mph but still endanger other drivers.
Secondly, people who drive recklessly will always do. Hey, personality is built in.. hard to change.. if habits are so easy to change, we wouldn't need religion to peace our mind, would we?
Arnold should do something about this; Cleary some people are trying to jack this $5 mil into their own pocket for promoting such stupid policy. Ok, so what if an asian kid mod his civic, how fast is it going to go with fat spoiler, sticker, and tinted windows? How dangerous is it going to be? I wonder wonder wonder~

Yeah, it was a cycle cop, 2 miles from my house. I see them working foothills blvd. all the time, but I didnt see him. Thanks to him, I know my car will do 70 in 2d gear (5AT), I was watching the tach.
After I win in court I will probably find a ticket on my car for tint(only 35/20) and no front plate........ LOL

This frickin' sucks!!! And my TT install was just completed today. I noticed that the statement from the police was made at Del Paso Road in Natomas about 2 miles away from my second home (western part of sac). This is were a lady was killed last month when she was hit by some "kids" street racing.
I used to leave my G there two weeks out of the month. Looks like I may not be driving it up there anymore. :-(

OH man..this really sucks. I really hope they dont do this type of thing in so cal. It would especially suck for the G's out here that sorta do attract more attention because of aftermarket aero kits.
that is so stupid....its so stupid that they say the do it to "generated significant revenue for the California Highway Patrol and local departments".....and that they "allow police to auction off seized cars and keep the profits" wtf?!
I just went on SEMA's site and found a section where they list state legislators that support modified car enthusiats and the hobby....
A CA state legislator that supports our hobby is Assemblyman Doug LaMalfa.
You can write to him at doug@douglamalfa.com .
I am gonna shoot him an email telling him how unfair this new law is and you guys should too....

I can understand people getting pissed off for getting pulled over for being a certain race, or having a certain type of body kit, but why is everyone getting so pissed that car owners with ILLEGAL modifications (in CA) will get ticketed. All those who have performed mod's on the cars w/out carb exemption should know the risk they are taking. California is like the strickest state in the US for emissions standards and regulations. No one ever forced someone to illegally modify their car.
I do agree the laws are bull****. They are complete and utter bull****. Let's see, what is an average car enthusiast to do, when he gets a $200 ticket, telling him to change out the illegal parts? pay the tickets or spend thousands of dollars to swap out the parts that he spent thousands of dollars and countless hours putting in. The choice is obvious and self-defeating for the state of CA.
CHP are the worst highway police I have ever had the "pleasure" of getting pulled over by. But all this heat is coming from the legislature and probably "concerned citizens". As gay as it sounds, it's probably best to write to senators/congressmen with concerns and think twice before slapping on a turbo or the like. The G35's are still very nice stock

Large spoilers, extra gauges or racing stickers what's legal about those things??? This is just a blanket thing to pull over anyone they please. Don't worry it's just our civil right slowly eroding away.
From what I've read there are no statistics to support that statement. Car and Driver did an article on the a while back and they actually caused more accidents.

I'm sure to get flamed, but most of you guys should've been around long enough to know how this works. Right or wrong, it makes some sense.
They have a problem the citizens want fixed, there are many. In particular, street racing kills innocent people (Insert articles here).
To address this, they realize it is impractical for police to be everywhere a street race could occur all the time. What's the next best way to reduce street racing (In theory)? Go after the people most likely to engage in street racing. How do you find them? You go after people who have modified their cars with an obvious focus on being (or looking) faster.
The subjectivity afforded the officers is the questionable part. Demographic profiling is nothing new. Most of you are guilty of it, saying that the idea of this legislation excludes white people somehow. I've seen plenty with cars that would be and do get hasled regularly. The car profile is the one most often seen in those "Street Race Kills" articles. Notice it's seldom a hugely lifted truck or a Ferrari Modena, and never an obnoxiously loud Harley.
So yeah, it's obviously a pseudo-legal way to single out a group who may engage in something illegal (Street racing), by enforcing some other less serious law they are breaking. Will it work? Doesn't matter, they can't really lose.
You have to blame the street racers. Sorry, but that's who they're trying to get to.

I think most of us would welcome cracking down on street racing. You hate hearing stories where two kids are going 100 MPH down the street, and they take out a family in a minivan.
But unless this article is oversimplifying the new regulation, it states:
"to begin cracking down on auto enthusiasts who modify their vehicles."
It doesn't mention specifically cutting down on the number of illegal races.
And we're not talking about test pipes or turbo kits here. They mention:
"illegal modification such as window tinting, large spoilers, extra gauges or racing stickers." None of those modifications make you any faster.
This just shows that these law makers have no familiarity with this area. If they really want to cut down on dangerous driving, they'd go after those people stuck on their cell phones in SUVs with poor visibility, who are simultaneously sipping their Starbucks coffee while cutting you off on the 405, cause they not only can't see your car, but they also don't give a crap if you're next to them.
This is just more feel good legislation, that'll have instant support from soccor moms, who again have no familiarity with car modifications, and unfortunately, they're the ones that vote.

I think sthis is incredibly stupid. $5 million dollars! I'd rather have the tax money going into things like schools and better public services. Tickets for exhaust without even testing the decibel levels?? Thats ridiculous. This means even some of our stock exhausts will get tickets because it's already happened on here. People are going to take time off to fight a ticket for being stock. Plus if someone is racing ok take their car and impound it for a month and give them a nice bill for storage but auctioning their car off and keeping the profits wtf! They need to be pulling over and stopping people in POS 87 hondas and corollas going 100+ on the freeway bouncin all over the place. At least if a car is modified right its less of a danger. Grr stupid laws.
*Edit* My dad made a great point in saying take the $5 million and build a drag strip in Sacramento. Get them off the street instead of giving all of us more trouble. Plus taking someones car and selling it and charging them and stuff thats just gonna make them mad. And mad people do waht? Commit crimes.

macgyver,
i understand your point. BUT, according to your argument, it would open the gates to some serious problems. in a sense, you are justifying profiling by stating that it is already being done...so, it's no big deal!!! so, let's start pulling over and ticketing cars with aftermarket rims since many drug dealers have aftermarket rims. let's pull over every mercedes benz and cadillac because a lot of mobsters drive those cars. warning.....we're going down that slippery slope if we think that way!!!!
