6MT shift point

quick question [05 6MT]:

When racing, at what RPM should I be shifting at for the most power? I have an 05. When I had my WRX and frequented the NASIOC boards, there were so many threads and debates as to where one should shift for optimal power, but there don't seem nearly as many here.

Currently I am shifting at 7000, but have read somewhere that the 05 redline is actually at 7300. Don't want to break anything but want to be shifting for the most power.

From the threads I've read, shifting at red-line will put you in the optimal range of the power band when you engage the next gear.
If you shift at peak power, you will fall below the optimal range after engagement, and if you take it to the limiter you will loose too much power from redline to limiter.

looking at the charts, the 6k range looks to get the best performance. After 6k, the HP starts to flatline and the torque has a steeper slope.

Thats an interesting dyno, out of all the dynos i've seen here, on the stock i've never seen it drop that much, usually the torque drops off a little, but not like that. Is that an automatic? Redline would be optimal shift point, as at that point the tourque may be pulling down, but your HP is still climbing. So your still getting a good punch out of the car. If your shifting around 6k your loosing out on a lot of your cars acceleration potential.

I just came back from setting my rev light to 7300.

Makes sense to shift right before redline.

Redline is 6900. The rev limiter is 7300. It is NOT GOOD to be bouncing off the rev limiter every time you want to drive hard. Remember when you engage the clutch you remove the load from the engine, causing the RPM to spike a little bit before you engage the next gear. So if you engage clutch at 7300 you will be bouncing off the rev limiter consistently.

But don't forget the RevLimiter is a computer controlled number. The engine can withstand higher RPM's but the computer limits it. It's bad to run your engine that high, but technically speaking, you should be able to bounce off the redline in every gear and not blow up the engine. However by running that high consistantly you will put more strain on your engine.

For those that increase their revlimiter they need to watch out, because they are approaching the upper limits of the engine.

Note that the torque part only goes from about 200 to 250, so the slope is going to look more exaggerated on a small range like that.
