Question about Speeding Ticket
Question about Speeding Ticket
If a cop car is in front of you (about 100 yards) and is not facing you, can he/she catch you on radar? I just got a ticket doing 48 in a 25, and there is no way I was going 48, and my radar did not go off....he said he caught me on radar.
Technically yes if he has a really nice and fairly rare radar gun it can clock you from that angle, but it sounds fishy particularally if your radar never went off, and you were not going that fast. Unforntunately cops can generally do what they want as far as citing traffic violations and they often get away with it. Anyway if he has the better gun he should have you on video with your speed in the corner; he would bring this to court.
If they see you have a radar many will try to stick it too you. As one cop told me back in highschool "you've probably been speeding much more than this before, so think of this as a ticket for all those other times."
1. What radar are you using? Many cheaper models can be dectected by cops.
2. Is it at all hidden? If a cop sees it; it can make you a target.

I have an escort 8500, and he actually said, "I guess it's time to get a new Radar Detector", and I said "It's funny that it didn't go off, but you caught me on radar" - then he just walked away and came back with the ticket. I was about 500 yards away from work too...it fricken sucks, but I guess I'll just have to see him in court and have the points reduced from 4 - 2.
I never knew that they had radar guns on the back of their cars...kind of crazy.

Yes, you can definitely be gotten in that position if the unit has a rear facing antenna. I would avoid using the "but my radar detector didn't go off" excuse in court!
I was sitting with a traffic officer (friend) in a restaurant once about 10 years ago. I guy came up and asked her if it was true that she could not get a corvette on radar because of the fiberglass body. She grimaced and said "yes, that is true." The guy left in his vette.
After he left I questioned her about it, thinking that was wrong. "Don't you clock corvettes on radar all the time?", I asked. "Yep.", she said.
