6MT throttle lag observations
6MT throttle lag observations
Raced a heavily mod'd WRX today, kept up side-by-side....I noticed this:
- As soon as I punched the clutch, the rev's dropped IMMEDIATELY and quickly, in all gears, from 1st rowing all the way to 5th gear, as it should!
This seems to happen to me only 15-25% of the time now.
The other 75% of the time, the throttle seems to lag greatly and I always feel the clutch being burned up a bit whenever going full throttle.
How to test: when going full throttle, release the gas and immediately press the clutch pedal, you will feel the clutch being burnt a bit.
This has always been my ONLY complaint about the coupe. The drive by wire throttle lag. However, now it seems to only happen 75% of the time now. Is it just me, or break-in, or pure randomness?
Note: 3500 miles on the odo now

Re: 6MT throttle lag observations
Just a thought bro:.... If it is throttle lag, then when you depress the clutch and let off on the gas simultaneously and you're getting clutch burn, then the tach should shoot up noticably between shifts.
What about revving. Does it respond quickly or is there a lag there too?
Is it possile you are still learning the car and it's 'quirks', or is it more than that?

Re: 6MT throttle lag observations
Well first off, the WRX couldn't have been too "heavily" modded, b/c I ran a guy with a 2K3 WRX, with intake, turbo exhaust, UDP, boost controller and downpipe, and he got me on every run. Before he got the UDP and downpipe, it was pretty close although still slightly faster, but now he pulls on me pretty consistantly.
But to get back to the topic, whenever I race, I notice whenever I shift (let off throttle, clutch in), the tach pretty much stays where it's at, since there is not enough time to rev-down. Once I shift, and let off the clutch and go to WOT again, the revs are instantly pulled down to match the next gear speed. This pulling down to the next gear will sometimes cause a little burn, depending on how often or long I race. But I expect this is normal considering the circumstances.

Re: 6MT throttle lag observations
I love the whole clutch, throttle and gearbox relationship. I can bang off ultra fast seamless shifts that will make a sequencial sytem jelious. I am not off the throttle enough for revs to have a chance to fall at all. The one and only glitch I ever encounter is the fact that I don't have a mechanical link to feel in the pedal when trying to sense how much throttle to apply to make seamless transitions from using the cruise control and using my foot instead. On ever mechanical throttled car I've every owned I can make that transition smoothly, but not with this car. Mid throttle shifts do require more thought in this car, but nothing I can't addapt to.

Re: 6MT throttle lag observations
I notice now after 5000 kms that the shifting is practically seamless ... no real drops unless I am shifting under 3500 rpms
try this out
shift generally fast but clutch in and out really fast ... it works awesome... no real drop or jerky movement and the shift is seamless.
I love that ...cept before you know it your at 100k

tnx dally the wally......i will try that!
hehe
ok about the HEAVILY MODDED WRX......it was a SOMEWHAT MODDED WRX........ happy?
It just looked heavily modded.....you know, exhaust, aluminum wing, limo tint, debadged, nice wheels, etc.

Re: 6MT throttle lag observations
Well, I've also raced a stock WRX, and walked all over him. I guess "heavily modded" is all in one's eyes. I usually don't really count an intake or exhaust as modified, or maybe slightly. I would consider the WRX I described as regular modified. To me, a car isn't heavily modded unless the warranty has been voided! :-) Like I said, all depends on the individual. The guy in the WRX I mentioned said he's guessing he's close to 40HP over stock. His buddy told me he up'ed the boost a little for our 2 races also.
Re: 6MT throttle lag observations
I also think mid throttle shifts are the hardest ones to get perfectly smooth. Under WOT, or close to it, I can pull off seamless shifts. Same goes for when I barely get on the gas in traffic and shift.
Re: 6MT throttle lag observations
on a wrx, full exhaust can make a huge difference
the up-pipe/downpipe combination gives it alot more low end power, besides addin top end power.
