Can someone explain the decision on the emergency brake?

I also have an AT, and I think the brake pedal "sucks" not the location of it but the mechanics, it should self dis-engage itself when you put the car in drive. On several instances when I first got the car, I would put it on, forget about it, come back the stereo would be on hi, I would forget about the brake and just drive away. The squeeling noise is only heard if the music is down. It's a good thing that the warranty replaced all the brake pads within the 1st year as I would of had learned an expensive lesson. Now I make a habit of checking it's location with my left foot prior to leaving.

In an automatic transmission equipped car, it really doesn't matter where the said is located. Actually, being located down below offers a better look with less clutter.
That's my guess.

Another reason for handbrake and it being placed on the driver side of the shifter is so people do not forget to release it.
Part of my arguement with the wife for getting the MT. The foot E brake make the G seem like an american car.
