oil change other then at the dealer?

Hi,
I was wondering if going to the dealer would be better then going to a local oil change shop (jiffy lube) or something like that.. I'm in college right now and back in Jersey, I only changed my oil at the dealer.

Any comments/suggestions?

The physical materials wont be different. However, when you get your oil changed at the dealer and get all the maintenence done there, the dealership will be more likely to service your car or fix problems they normally wouldn't. See if you can find a Nissan dealership there, it will be cheaper and will still go in the computers.

My only take on independent shops vs. dealers is that you know what kind of standards dealers have. You know they use genuine Nissan oil and filters where Jiffy Lube may use whatever comes cheapiest to make an extra buck. Oil changes at independent shops are around $20-25. Infiniti charges $40 and Nissan charges $30. I'd take it to Nissan

Yes same procedure, and like mentioned above, they use genuine parts. For the extra 10-15 bucks, take it to the dealer.

If you take it to a fast-lube place, just check to be sure your filler cap is back in place before you leave. Forgetting to replace that cap seems to be the most common mistake they make.

On another note, I was once told that the 'house oil' (whatever they default to) that they have in a big drum and run through the guns is usually recycled oil. It was told that if I had to use one of those places, pick whatever oil they have still in a bottles.

Another side note... ...my mechanic HATES Penzoil and can smell it on the dipstick. Nothing but bad experiences for him, he says. Take it FWIW.

I bring a filter and only use mobile-1 syn to a quick lube; My local Infiniti dealer wanted $80 to change the oil, so I take mine to a trusted quick lube.

I know one of the guys that changes the oil at the quick lube and he just recommends to bring your own filter and oil. As far as the actual change I asked him and he said that the G is a little harder because of the cover, but there really is not much to screw up. He does so many cars all day and he said with the tools he has it makes it so easy to change oil.

Stick with the peeps who know our rides better than anyone else, and I believe Nissan is as good as Infiniti here ( but cheaper).

It'd be cheaper to bring in your own oil. The problem is will they use your oil?!? I guess you could mark the bottles and ask them to give them back to you.

If you don't trust your dealer to put in the oil that you specifically requested them to use, then maybe you should find another dealer.

You're getting ripped off- I bring my own Mobil One (~$20 for 5 quarts from Wal-Mart) to the Infiniti dealer (Lokey Infiniti in Clearwater, FL) and the charge is $32.38 to change the oil with the Mobil One that I brought along.

Jiffy lube is my choice. Quality full service with requested Mobil 1. They even ask if I want the better filter...and I can always watch what they do. I'm a frequest visitor, so they know me. 15 min and done, including Sunday. Dealership - only for major maintenance (transmission, cooling system, brakes).
