Interesting conversation
I just had a conversation with an M45 owner. He was so knowledgeable about cars. Unfortunately, he didn't respect the coupe as much as I would expect him to. He thought he could smoke me, but I gave him the stats. Then he said he would smoke me in a 1/4 mile. All in all, it was a good conversation, and he said he got the M, because he has a family, and that was the next best thing after the coupe . I told him to look out for coupes, and to take it easy with his kids in the car .

Re: Interesting conversation
He obviously doesn't know that much about cars because look how damn ugly the M is, you gotta be kidding me to buy a car that ugly..........

Re: Interesting conversation
I just popped over to Edmunds.com for their numbers on both cars. Edmunds isn't the definitive word on performance numbers necessarily (and who is, really), but since they tested both cars the numbers are theoretically apples and apples.
For the M45, 0-6 in 6.4 sec, 1/4 mile in 14.8sec
For the G35 coupe (automatic), 0-60 in 6.2, 1/4 mile in 14.66
Pretty close at the quarter mile for sure, but if I were you, I'd practice up a bit and bet him a steak dinner you can beat him on the track. Bon appetit!

The M45 is a cool car. I'd buy one if I was in the market for a full-size sedan. It looks alot better if you get an aftermarket grill, and I like that it's rare. It's also much faster than the American full-size sedans that market themselves as "muscle" cars (like the Mercury Marauder). I wouldn't be surprised if it could take a G35 Sedan AT, but it's not quite as fast as a Coupe (even in a straight line), so go ahead and educate him.

Re: Interesting conversation
The AT G35 Coupe can do much better than 14.66 in the quarter mile. I've personally hit 14.59 stock, and that was without torque-braking. It was also on the manumatic, which is supposed to be slower (except that my automatic has been infused with the soul of Miss Daisy). If it was worth risking my transmission and loading up the brakes for a better launch (as these magazine guys are supposed to do), I'd expect to hit 14.3s. I'm saddled with a 2.4+ second 60' time by launching at idle, which is way behind a well-launched MT 350Z (around 2.0 for them, with some claiming 1.9s). That's .4 out of the .5 they're beating me by overall.

Re: Interesting conversation
I think the M45 is a beaut myself. Stately, classy, comfortable, roomy, while packing a punch nearly as strong as the G35 Coupe (while it does have more horsepower, it IS NOT as fast!). Personally, I'd be quite content to have my Coupe for a pleasure vehicle, and the M45 as a daily driver.

Re: Interesting conversation
...and it's really going to be rare when they do the redesign of the exterior in two years - an Austin Infiniti salesman recently spoke with some big-wig at Nissan Corporate who said the new vehicle was the "most gorgeous car he's ever seen" (direct quote) - I'm just wondering if that's what he said when the current M rolled out onto the showroom floor...

Re: Interesting conversation
Having Driven both the M45 is at least as fast as the Coupe if not faster that 14.6 is off. Most other times that i have seen show the M45 as a 14.0 car
It has a 340hp 4.5L V8 and weighs 3800lbs now if my 3700lb Vr-4 can run the 1/4mi in 13.7 then a 340hp auto should easily be able to run it in 14.0 or better.

Re: Interesting conversation
Cristo,
You're only looking at part of the equation.
OK, you say you've driven both, but have you really pushed them? I would frankly be surprised if the M is as fast as the Coupe, even with greater HP specs.
One is a Sports Coupe, the other is a Luxury Sedan.
The REAL difference is gearing. A lower rear axle ratio, different gearing in the trans, or any number of other differences could easily explain the slightly slower quarter mile times for the M.
Unless you're a professional driver (which I doubt), I can't accept at face value that you can tell the difference in quarter mile times just be seat-of-the-pants feel. I'd rather trust Edmunds' results as to which is faster.
