1 day, 480 miles, 2 windsheld cracks..
went to a wedding on saturday. 240 miles each way.
i distinctly remember the two rocks hitting my windshield, about 100 miles apart on the interstate. i was cruising at about 85-87 mph and coming up behind a semi. BANG. saw a rock hit just under the left windshield wiper. then 100 miles later coming up on another semi. BANG. rock hits just below right windshield wiper.
then, it gets cold. i crank the heat and defrost, and wham i have an 18 inch crack going vertical right in the middle of my windshield, then turning right for about 6 more inches, stopping at ANOTHER existing windshield chip.
i take a closer look under my right wiper, and there's a noticeable chip. i look even closer and see a 12-14 inch crack running along the lower part of the windsheild, just above the wiper blade.
thank bob i have a $100 deductible on comprehensive insurance.
trip stats:
From home to wedding: 238 miles, 4 hours = 59.5mph average speed
From wedding to home: 242 miles, 3 hours 20 mins = 72.6 mph average speed. wanted to get home to fix the damn windshield, and made a riced-out civic look stupid on a wide-open stretch of interstate.
moral of the story: maybe i should drive slower than 90mph, or buy a more fuggin durable windshield. lets go with the latter.

Or don't follow closely behind Semi's. I make it a habit not to follow closely behind any cars. Especially Semi's.

At least its only $100 to get it fixed.
Just for reference.. If anyone ever has this happen to them and has debris from a truck hit them, be it on the windsheild, bumper, anywhere try and get their information, be it their license plate, or their company name so you can call them and deal with them. They usually shouldnt put up too much of a fight paying for the deductable or damage prices.

Could have been worse. A friend of mine picked up her brand new M35 Friday evening, drove it 10 minutes and deer ran out in front of her. $11,000 in damage. I feel your pain, be thankful it's just a windshield.
Have you checked with your insurance company because if you have full coverage windshields should be replaced for free. I know on Allstate that's the case because my friend had a crack in his windshield and it was replaced for free. It's considered some sort of safty issue or something like that.
Keep in mind that replacing your windshield according to factory specifications costs no more than $175...Well at least here in California. So if your insurance premium goes up due to this incident, you might want to think about paying for it yourself. Check with your insurance representative.
Your insurance rate should not be affected if it's covered by your insurance for free. It might go up if you have to file a claim and pay a deductable but if your insurance covers the cost of the replacement than it should have not affect on your insurance.
