g35 exhaust sounds

Re: g35 exhaust sounds
Both the G35 Coupe's and the 350Z's exhaust systems sound identical, in stock and in aftermarket form. Regardless of what anyone will tell you, or what you may have read on Z forums (about there systems being louder and crisper due to the fact they have 7 more ponies), outside and to the human ear, you can't tell them apart.

Re: g35 exhaust sounds
Hmm I actually beg to differ. I have a 350Z myself and the G35 Coupe exhaust sounds different. I have put one on lift and looked at it.
I really can't figure it out. The g35 has a slightly different tone and I like it! I wonder if its cause the pipe is longer then the Z? Something in the resonator or muffler, but I feel they sound different slightly...
Anyone else agree?

Re: g35 exhaust sounds
The rear cans as far as I have seen are basically the same, but the only questionable area that may play a small effect on tone, would be longer pipes, and true that can make a slight diference, but I have been around both cars and I cant hear a diference. Also the G your 18 year old son is zipping around may sound a little dieferent that grandmas G's, whos not even seen 5K rpm.

Re: g35 exhaust sounds
I have a video of the G35C, that has several decent shots of what the exhaust sounds like. I found this video a while ago, and I'm not sure who filmed it, but its not me. Anyway, here it is (Right click on the link and hit Save File As...)

My uncle has a 350Z, and I think the exhaust sounds very similar to my G35C. I think the G35C exhaust is louder from inside the car than in the 350Z. Both exhausts are fairly loud for a stock system, which I like. The sound is somewhat unique too - I can tell what kind of car it is driving by now without even seeing it.

Re: g35 exhaust sounds
Gawd, I hate to bring this up again - but what is the prevailing opinion on the Borla exhaust sound vs. the stock exhaust sound.
Personally, I'm not willing to spend 600 bucks for a few ponies improvement if the sound is not at least as good or better than stock.

Re: g35 exhaust sounds
"Its the longer pipe that makes the slight difference. Pipe length can affect a lot of things including sound and power."
A significantly longer pipe would certainly sound different, all else being the same. Basically, it will have a lower, bassier resonant frequency.
Think pipe organ...the lowest notes are produced by the longest (and widest) pipes. It's also true for other wind-based musical instruments, like saxophones for example. The length of the air column (the distance between the mouthpiece and the horn) is the primary reason why a Baritone sax can produce lower notes than a Soprano sax. Sound waves get longer as the get lower, so short air columns can't produce low frequencies.
The exact difference in resonant frequency between the 350Z's exhaust system and the G35's could be calculated exactly by measuring the pipe lengths. There's a direct, inverse ratio of length to frequency (longer = lower).

Re: g35 exhaust sounds
It has to be the pipe length. The sound has more of a distance to bounce around and create a different tone. If you think of it in a physics manner then it all seems to make sense. i have also heard the "Z" sound i think it is a little more of a higher tone due to the approx. 10 in difference in length.
