I've been driving stick for the past 6 years and mostly 5 speed MT. I've raced and never shifted in the wrong gear (at least i don't remember doing so), anyways i was racing my friend's Civic with a modded Type R engine. while runnig on fifth gear, just before redline i tried to hit 6th but instead i didn't push hard enough to the right and instead hit back my 4th gear..... boom my RPM hit the limiter. my question is will this really going to affect my engine? i know lots of people who hit the wrong gear and blown their engine, my car seems fine and i only have 1300 miles on the car. im still getting used to driving 6MT plus i'm used to driving way past 8K RPM that i've hit my rev limiter on my G a couple of times...

ouch, i hope u pushed the clutch in , in time. Your motor should be fine, but dont let it happen again, or it could be a lot worse.

I spoke with the head mechanic at my dealership about my clutch that didn't engage causing the engine to red line for two seconds or so. He assured me Nissan/Infiniti engines are solid and can take the abuse.

nothing can prevent a mechanical overrev. rev limiter or not. i hope your car will be ok.

Racing and missed a shift into 6th.... How fast were you going???

If you haven't noticed anything wrong with the car now you're fine.

you're an idiot if you were street racing at those speeds, but as far as
motor goes, if you hit the rev limiter while you had your foot on the gas,
the motor will not blow as there is fuel going to it and the ecu mandated
the rev limiter, not the drivetrain.

He said he was close to redline & down shifted to 4th instead of 6th.
If he let the clutch out, there was definitely mechanical overrev.

Knowing the shift revs, you can figure what mechanical revs were reached,by the difference in the gear ratios.

You are certainly right about that Intgr8r. Unfortunately the ECU can't save you from mechanical overrev from a mistaken downshift.

6MT redline in 5th is about 144 mph with a ratio of 1.00 , redline is 114 mph in 4th with a ratio of 1.27. If my math is right I calculated the mechanical rpms reached would have been close to 8200 less what he was under the redline by.
These are strong engines if there was no damage done.

do an engine compression test, check your valve spring, some people do get away, some bent their valve spring some blown engine or piston. hoping you are the lucky one.
hit rev limit when you upshift it wont hurt since ecu will cut off fuel to protect your engine, but downshift and over rev is different story

As long as you didn't have to double back and fill your trunk with parts and pieces, you should be fine.

Get a compression test. That's the only way to know for sure. Also if you notice performance problems in the future, chances are you can attribute it to this event.
