Daylight running lights
Daylight running lights
Has anyone looked into the feasibility and cost of installing the "daytime light control module" that turns on the headlight (1/2 regular brightness) and the taillights whenever the ignition is on? This module is standard on cars delivered in Canada as required by law and apparently is wired for on US cars. Infinity is the only premium car manufacturer to not provide this function as standard in the US. Not only is it a proven safety feature but at least in NY having such daylight running lights earns a substantial discount on auto insurance.
Re: Daylight running lights
What I am talking about are headlights and taillights that go on as soon as the ignition is turned on so that they are automatically turned on at all times that the car is running even during daylight. I am NOT talking about the function that turns the headlights on when darkness is sensed. My G35 coupe does not have the auto daylight light on feature nor do any others I have seen. Page 2-17 of the owners manual refers to this feature and specifies CANADA ONLY. If your lights go on automatically during the daytime when your iginition is turned on then apparently you have a car that was built for Canada. The Electronic Service Manual describes the control module that is installed in Canadian delivered cars and I was wondering if anyone has considered having it installed after delivery.
Re: Daylight running lights
Forgive my response. I figured that I've made likely over 1200 useful posts and responses, and thought I'd make a lighter post regarding one of the forum peeves, ie Infinity rather than Infiniti. No offense intended.
Now I'll try to be semi-useful. There are numerous posts on the tech forum re DRLs. So far, no one has attempted a factory DRL activation as far as I know. There are however, some useful suggestions, and I seem to remember something posted about cost. Not certain that the DRL module is included (unactivated) in the US Gs.

I also find this a bothersome omission on Infiniti's part. I would certainly like to rectify this if it wasn't too expensive.

Re: Daylight running lights
I have made some inquery on this with techs and dealer parts dept.
Everyone says "cant do it" obviuosly they could care less
The module is not listed in the U.S. parts computer at dealers but is in the sevice manual.
WHen I asked if I could order the module and plug it in , they said the harness is different.
I find it hard to belive that nissan made made 4 harnesses for the same car(US canada Japan europe)
I find that people are almost hitting me if i dont run with my headlights on.I already was hit on the pkwy - they said they didnt see me.Unless you have red or Carribiean blue the Coupe is hard see as its low and has a sloping front that dissapears in peoples blind spot.
All I would like to know is if the harness is there like GM and ford put the bulb sockets in all the harnesses and for the higher trim lines, they pull them down and put in a bulb right on the line.I bet the harness is stuffed away somwhere.
Also required is the bypass switch on the parking brake and nessacary wiring for it.

Re: Daylight running lights
Actually there are still a few enlightened (pun intended) "luxury manufacturers" not sold on the DRL idea - Mercedes, Jaguar, Porsche, etc.
However, if you think daytime running lights are a good idea, why not just run with your "dims" on all the time?

Re: Daylight running lights
Just to clarify...Daytime Running Lights as required by law here in Canada do not include the tail lights. Only the front high beams come on and with a reduced intensity.

Re: Daylight running lights
There are some aftermarket DRL kits available. Usually works on your low-beams, so because of our HIDs, we'd have to wire into the Highs or Fogs. I'm not sure where the kits are available nor what would be involved with the mod, but I'm sure it's do-able.

Re: Daylight running lights
Why would you want DRL's anyway? This is one of the main reasons I haven't considered buying a Toyota the past few years. I can turn my own lights on or off thank you! GM also does this - but I would never buy a GM product anyway.
I understand that in Canada, it's more of a safety feature since they have more twilight hours in the winter being father North. But in the USA, what's the point!?

Re: Daylight running lights
Incidentally the POINT to DRLs is as mentioned before they have been proven to be a very positive safety feature which is why of course the Canadian government requires it and why at least 1/2 the new cars being manufactured have it as standard and finally why at least in NY the insurance companies give you a discount for having it. If you buy into the safety arguement clearly remembering to manually turn on lights every time you turn on the car is not practical.
