Dealer Recommended Services

Is it worth paying the hundredes of bucks to follow the dealer's recommended service plans? I should be nearing 3500 miles soon and wonder if it is really necessary. If not, what should the recommendated services miles be?

hey marvinclt, I would definitely follow the manufacturer's recommended service intervals. However, you don't need to go to Infiniti to service your car. Many people do fluid changes on their own or go to an oil change place (Jiffy Lube, SpeedeeOil) where the cost is less. It won't affect your warrantee but still help your car last longer.

The tables on your owners manuals give a good guide line to what needs to be done. If you notice it is very minimal, Oil change is the predominant factor, Tire rotation?? on a coupe?? rear tires are bigger, on a sedan that may apply but not in a coupe. The other fluids are very easy to check and replenish, like the wiper washer fluid. Coolant and brake fluids should be checked an at this mileage will be within limits.
Low brake fluid level is also a guideline to wear in the pads, when it gets to a low reading check the pads more than likely they will be worn. Use your good judgement, but this is not a 1960's VW , it needs very little attencion!

LoL I do my own Oil and I'd likew to see them rotate the tires on a coupe, that would just be hilarious. I doubt I'm gonna have them do anything. They don't drain your wiper fluid and replace it do they? I had a dealer do this to me once and charge me for it meanwhile I had just put in Rain-X fluid the day before.

OK, don't let them charge you for rotation for obvious reasons. However, the tires have be removed for a balance so the charge is the same.

Re: Dealer Recommended Services

i read in a consumer reports article (also some auto programming on tv too) that with today's high tech autos, changing the oil every 3000 miles isn't necessary. they found that there was no difference if you changed it every 3 months (around 3000 miles) or 6 months (about 6000 miles). however, speaking to everyone at infiniti or on the forums, it appears that everyone believes that we must change it everyone 3750 miles.

personally, i don't know what to believe. and if you follow the maintenance schedule in the owner's manual, you can change it every 6 months or 7500 miles if you follow schedule 2. i believe schedule 1 is of people who do a lot of short trips and as the manual says--taxi service, bumper-to-bumper driving, etc. and according to most people, most people fall under schedule 1.

so who is correct? are those claims on oil changes from consumer reports and such wrong? are those people who insist on changing every 3750 miles overzealous, like those who insist on using premium gasoline on non-luxury cars that don't require them, believing that it is better for their cars? of course, the people at the dealers say do it every 3750 miles because what do they have to lose and it only brings more business to the dealers.

if anyone knows the answers to these questions, please reply and enlighten us.

Re: Dealer Recommended Services

I'm no expert but I do know the engineers who developed this car had input into the owner's manual, particularly the maintenance part. Being a development engineer that does my products' documentation myself, I would trust them over joe mechanic or consumer reports.

i too have read that you don't need to svc it every 6k or so. but, so many people make $ when you do (mechanics, manufacturers, etc) that why should they tell you not to.

Re: Dealer Recommended Services

I have a1990 Nissan maxima, I bought it brand new, it now has 210,000 miles on it and still going strong, neither service schedulle suited my fancy, 3,000 too soon 7,500, maybe too long, for oil changes at least, so I compromised, oil and filter every 5,000 miles, easy to keep track in the odometer and apparently it worked, the engine still feels strong and runs as smooth as silk.
Castrol syntex was my choice of oil in the Maxima.
In my "G" I have been changing it every 4,000 miles , the first time Infiniti did it and they used Quaker state , the second one was at the Nissan dealer and they used Chevron oil , they both called it a 3,500 mile service, the car runs great I noticed no diference. If i change to synthetic oil i may go back to the 5,000 mile interval, it worked for me and my Maxima.
