Question Oil change at the dealer

I had my 6MT serviced today at Ramsey Infiniti. I was talking to the service rep and I asked about synthetic oil. He said that Infiniti does not recommend synthetic oil. I was quite surprised to hear that. Anyone else been told this?

I went ahead with regular oil at that point.

I took the car to a friend of mine's garage after that to see how difficult it would be to change it yourself. I have quickly seen the aero cover over the bottom of the engine and wanted to see how difficult it was to remove and get to. I put the car on the lift and lookeed under and took a few pictures as well. I was surprised to see a rectangular cutout (2" X 6") right around the drain plug. Mine is an 03 so I am sure that not too much has changed.

I read where the cover has to be removed to change the oil. There was no oil residue around the opening so maybe they still take it off. I think they still have to remove part of the cover to get to the filter.

Anyone got any advice/knowledge around this subject??

Yes I believe it's still in the owner's manual to not use synthetic oil.....don't know why...I think most ignore that and use it anyway since it's a better oil.
..and most dealerships install synthetic too...

The oil can be changed without removing that cover but it's much easier and cleaner to remove it. Not a big deal.

^^ I agree..
I know my dealer carries Mobil1.

& yes the dealer drops the tray to change the oil.
They only drop the back bolts & let it hang from the bumper.

Oil change.......

Holy $hit, you can't listen to service advisors. They are nothing more than
salespersons that want to spend your $.Plus this one doesn't know jack about what you should be using! You need to use synthentic oil
if for no other reason than it's better for your car! It's also important
that you change your oil and filter every 3,000 miles regardless of what
type of oil you use. Mobil I.....Royal Purple use only pure synthentic oil
you won't be sorry and you can sleep at night knowing your doing the
best you can for your Gee

Interesting

Lynnes Dealership charges my cousin $80 for an oil change, since they claim they use synthetic for his FX35 which has the same engine, so I don't know.

Interesting. You would figure that the dealer would want to make more money by selling you synthetic!

$80 seems to be a little too much for an oil change.

$80 for synthetic as opposed to $34.99 for regular oil.

Why in the world would you use synthetic oil if you change your oil every 3K miles? Anyone who uses dyno oil and changes it every 3K miles will easily get 200K miles on almost any modern engine. If you buy a Porsche TT and follow the factory recommendation, you'll change your oil around every 12K miles. And if I'm not mistaken the oil filter is only replaced every other oil change. So why would Porsche have these long oil change intervals on a $150K car if they thought that changing oil every 3K miles would be better? Keep in mind that Porsche, unlike BMW and Audi, charges for its maintenance.

I had an 04' WRX before my G. I was told by a rep from Subaru of America that Subaru recommended using conventional oil in their engines. His reason was that all of their engines are designed and tested using conventional oil.

I'm thinking maybe Infiniti has a similar take on oil usage Just my .02
