the tuner's (and in my opinion, the correct) interpretation of moss-magnusson, in this case:

If your synchros go bad, this could be attributed to the short shifter because the throws are now shorter and this could contribute to the excessive wear of synchros during normal and "spirited" driving.

Otherwise, it should affect no other OEM parts if installed improperly. If you screw up the install, then... well... you sucky sucky long time. And i'm sure it will cost you more than 5 dorrar.


The dealership, however, might think differently.

Well, this isn't an option for me anymore. I recently sold my house and moved into a condo. So I don't have the tools/space to do this. Even though I'd just love to do it. Especially, since I hate shops doing work on my car. I havn't found too many shops that really go the extra mile like I would on my own car.

So, you guys inviting me to your garage??? LOL.

 

I doubt many places would even do aftermarket installs for insurance and legal reasons. I know that it's hard to find a place to install aftermarket brakes. That being said, a shifter can be done on the street with a set of jack stands and it takes less than an hour. Frankly you'll probably need adjustment anyway after installation and it's not prudent to keep bringing it back to a shop for 3 minutes worth of work you can do with a screwdriver in a parking lot

 

Well, I'm seriously comtemplating buying a set of jack stands, but if I do I'll need to buy a jack, etc., etc. Which probably would end up costing me more and being more of a pain in the neck. I just wish I had a driveway and some tools in my garage again. I know it would be a simple job, but again I don't have those things handy.

 

You can pick up a set for around $30 that'll get the job done.

 

Does anyone know how the Topspeed Pro-1 stacks up? Durability, ease of install, vibrations, etc?

Dunno about the Topspeed, but I can tell you about the Rogue Engineering short shifter. It's top notch, IMO. I bought a pair of jackstands and did the install by myself in about 45 minutes. Pretty easy if you can get the car off the ground. It has much more feel, directness and precision than the stock and I haven't had any problems with vibration or anything else. I highly recommend it.

 

Hm - thought Rogue Engineering said it wasn't much of a change for the 05+ shifters. You notice an improvement, huh?

Yep, it does. Just make sure to give the circular metal bezel a good tug, but don't get carried away and pull too much. You just need to pull an inch or so to get it loose.
