Do We really need to pay used car tax?

Hey this is my first posting!

I am looking to purchase G35 after selling my current car. When somebody buys my car, he needs to pay the sales tax even if it's used. But as far as I know, the buyer/seller put in how much they pay/receive and that determines the overall tax amount.

Since this tax is still near 10%, can't just both buyer and seller agree to reduce the amount to minimal and avoid paying the tax twice? (once for the new car & now for the used car) I think this won't work with dealer or broker but can definetely work with private parties.., I think..

What do you guys think?

in theory, you can put down as the sales price any amount you want, unless there are still original payments left on the car. then the sales price can't be lower than that.

one thing (though illegal but hard to catch) is that when the new owner goes to register the car, they say it is a gift from their step father (explains different last name). then, DMV will say it has value of $1 and you only pay pennies in tax.

The only tax you should be paying is State sales tax. So if you live in a state with 10% tax - Ouch!!
