Coupe: 5AT versus 6MT

Hey everyone,

I'm completely new to the site. I am STRONGLY considering getting the coupe after I get a promotion/pay raise in a few months. I'm literally lusting for one.

I know the basic differences between the 5AT and the 6MT (comes w/ SSP) in terms of the dealer specs. Had a couple questions:

1. Has anyone done a performance comparison of the 5AT vs. 6MT? If so, what are the results?
2. Does the SSP (specifically the VLRD) make a big performance difference?
3. Is driving the 5AT still fun?
4. Will I have no street cred if I go with the 5AT?

I currently drive a stick, but commute into the city daily (lot's of stop and go gets annoying after a few years with stick). So I'm really torn between the convenience of the 5AT and the "purer" 6MT. Anyone have any thoughts?

Also, Rosenthal seems to regularly advertise the 5AT coupe for $29.9k. They also quoted me $33.0k for the 6MT. I'm going with no options (except for standard SSP w/ 6MT). I can't afford 'em. Anyone have recommendations between Rosenthal vs. IOC and prices?

Cheers,
Marcus

That's a tough one....
I've always driven stick as well, except my trucks.
I had the decision made for me though....with a bum left knee.

While I do miss the MT....
Is the AT fun to drive? .....
absolutely the Infiniti MM is one of the best there is.
I use it a LOT

Tough decision. The AT is nice in the G35, but for me the 6MT is the way to go. I too have to sit in traffic, but I bought the car for those times when I'm able to get out onto the open road...or track. Either way you're going to have a sweet ride.

LOL Do you think a stock G35 manual or auto has street cred?

Hummm....stick or auto? Its a tough choice. I always hated automatics growing up. Now i have 2 autos.....a 10sec Buick GN, and my G35. The G35 is still pretty fun to zip around town in. When your in traffic, let it shift itself. When you wanna have a little fun, put it in manual mode. Its been my experience that the 6speeds run a little stronger in the top of 1st and 2nd gear. I have ran a few 6 speed G's and 350Z's in my auto. They get me by almost a car in the first 2 gears, but i usually reel them in by the top of 3rd.....then its a dead heat after that. Either way....you will enjoy the car.

Good point on the stock. I'm not shooting for street cred among the tuners or even the cars of owners on this message board. Everyone here has really sweet rides.

I'm just wondering how much crap I'll get for buying a beautiful sports car with an automatic. I'm looking more for credibility from enthusiast drivers in general, not modders.

sure if you fully understand controlling the G....
Basically 6MT will perform way better than AT as it has more power than AT.
I somehow drive AT, but miss alot about MT.

You can still have fun MM mode from AT.
One more, many say MM is a bit faster than hill&toe(normal driver).. sorry if im wrong,

If im getting next, Ill get 6MT

Hey Chinadian, we have a G35 (National G Club) club based in the DC/MD/VA area... you should join. www.nationalgclub.com and check out our forums.

I have a 5AT, and I like it, but I miss the 6MT alot. I had a Z with the 6MT. I will probably buy an MT when the new 07 comes out, that is unless I buy an M and I don't have a choice. For an Auto it is a great transmission.

I already joined. Looked at every single picture in the gallery today (much better than actually working ...)

Are there some comparisons on the NationalGClub forums? I'll check it out.

I would say, the performance different between 5AT and 6MT is minimum, go for what you personally prefer. Is the car going to be daily driven in traffic? basically you gotta decide which is more practical for you. Good luck.. hope to see you at one of the meets.
