They recycle it and get some money for it, since oil is a valuable natural resource.

I know for a fact that Pep Boys and Auto Zone take your old oil from you for free, and many landfills have self-serve disposal tanks that you can dump your old oil into, along with big barrels to throw your oil filters into.
