Do they tell you what type of oil they are using? Because most shops carry recycled oil which is crap instead of synthetic

I get a 5 quart gallon oil for around 20 and then 8 bucks for the filter. all together i spend less then 30 and i do my own oil changes. I never let anyone else let alone an oil shop/dealer change my oil.

I just bought a 6 pack of 5W30 Mobil 1 quarts at sam's club. It was $28.xx You basically getting a sixth quart for free!

As far as filters go, I always get the Purolator Pure One filter. It has a much greater capacity than stock , and it isn't expesive. The K&N oil filter is too much money...don't waste $14 on that one.

I do this as well... 5 gallon quart of Mobil 1 from Wal-Mart, and a 6 dollar Purolator Pure One oil filter from Pep Boys.

21 screws and 45 minutes later.. my pig's rolling on fresh oil.

no, it was mobil one. The regular kind was like 25 or something. Anyway why would anyone change the oil yourself?

Take it to Sears or some automotive store. Many of them take used oil.

Some of us enjoy playing with our cars. I like to tinker on my cars, just part of being "a car guy."

additionally, my dealer is about an hour away. no way that I am going to make an appointent, drive an hour, wait at the dealer or take a loaner, then pick my car up and drive an hour back. My time is worth more than that to sit at a dealership.

I do my oil changes in the evening......it only takes about 30-45 minutes and I like checking out my car to make sure all looks well underneath.

I use to do my own oil changes but... it's a hassle and I have no time for that stuff anymore, I buy my own oil and filter from autozone or anywhere they have it on sale but usually they got buy 5 quarts and get the 6th free there too.

Then I take my own oil and bring to jiffy lube or valvoline and have them change the oil for 10 bucks.. 5 minutes and I'm on my way.

I talk to people there on a regular basis since I take my wifey's rav4 to get the "cheap" oil changes there. There's another option.

I like to do it myself, because I know that I'm not going to screw it up and if I happened to screw it up.... at least I'm aware of the fact that something is messed up, so that I can fix it(rather than an oil shop just trying to conceal or ignore the problem). I also like to be able to look around under my car and make sure everything else is in fine working order and usually take this opportunity to clean out my engine bay and also check every other fluid level. I'm not terribly fond of other people that I don't know driving my car, either.

It is a misdemeanor offense to pour motor oil into the ground, sewer, lake or any other place besides proper disposal methods. Same goes for the oil filter. For this reason(in addition to the fact that they make some money from it), most chain auto-parts stores will accept your used motor oil. They recycle it and get some money for it, since oil is a valuable natural resource.

I know for a fact that Pep Boys and Auto Zone take your old oil from you for free, and many landfills have self-serve disposal tanks that you can dump your old oil into, along with big barrels to throw your oil filters into.
