Doing an Oil Change on Your Own (Questions)

Hey everyone,

For everyone that does their own oil changes, how are you guys getting your cars up, so that you can get under there and change the oil? I have ramps, which is probably the most common way, but I refuse to use them on my G, because I do not want to scratch the paint on the wheel well or bumper...

Any other ways of doing this or are there different ramps available with smaller angles so that the incline is not so steep? I mess up my Hyundai whenever I change the oil, but I don't even wash that anymore since I got the G coupe... Thanks

Jaime

i've done this in the past, for convenience, not because of angle of ramps.

if you live on a quiet street and have driveway, approach driveway at sharp angle and only have one front wheel go up on curb. don't hit or brush curb, just use it as a one tire ramp.

aren't method like this going to stop all of the oil from draining? Not positive, but I thought the car was supposed to be level?

Go to your local Pep Boys or Autozone store and buy a pair of Rhino Ramps. They're plastic ramps with very low angles so the G will clear without scraping. A lot of people with low profile cars use them. Very popular. I bought them for doing oil changes on my Z06 and they work great.

That only jacks up one side of the car, which puts it at a funky angle for an oil change. Plus, you certainly won't catch me under a car that's only supported by the emergency jack.

I found that the Rhino's work very well. Walmart had them for about $26.50 or something. I did notice that they are at 17° and will scrape the G if not placed properly. They slid a little on me at first when I got on them but that was because there was a tiny bit of gravel. The only downside I see is that they are a hell of a lot bigger than a jack. Keep that in mind if you don't have garage space.

Re: Doing an Oil Change on Your Own (Questions)

I get lots of stuff from Griot's Garage Catalog, and in their catalog they offer an hand pump oil/liquid extractor. Has anyone used such a device? Would you still need the ramps to get to the oil filter? I've seen some posts where they say that the oil filter is next to impossible to get loosened. So far my dealer has done all the changes with my supplied Mobile 1 oil.

I spoke with someone who used an oil extractor. It apparently works quite well, but it does leave a certain amount of residual oil in the pan. I've never had a problem with getting the oil filter off, but you need the oil filter wrench of the proper size.

That's the nice thing about doing your oil yourself, once you get the first filter off. Hand-tighten and hand-loosen the filter. It doesn't need to be super tight. Once you get it snug, you just give it a quarter-turn more and you're done.

Rhino Ramps are the ticket as Z said...I have a pair and they're VERY sturdy and the angle's just right.

Drive it like I stole it?
Hell...drive it like I'm making payments on it...

Re: Doing an Oil Change on Your Own (Questions)

Hey everyone,

Thanks a lot for the responses. I will definitely check out the Rhino ramps. I have black so I refuse to have my paint scratched as I said before. Also, is it ok to go to synthetic oil if my first oil change is around 3100 miles?

I have a motorcycle and I went to synthetic after two oil changes and 2,500 miles.... Bike never ran better, but since we are talking about two totally different machines, I need some advise.. Thanks guys.

Re: Doing an Oil Change on Your Own (Questions)

just bought the rhino ramps. www.kragen.com $19.99 + tax = $21.69

I did a quick try to test them. Mine slides when I drive up on it. I tried doing it alone, can't see and dont know when to stop. Would be nice if I had a friend to guide me up. + driving a 6MT in my garage with a 5 degree slight incline.

Couldn't get it up.... any tips?

Put a mirror so you can see where you are going.
As far as the incline goes, try to use your hand brake until you engage the clutch. Not sure if that ruins anything though.
