How empty is "E"?

Guys,

I was quite busy this week and drove to and from work for 3 days after my gas light came on. For the first time ever, my gauge was below E by a hair and I STILL only got 16.6 gallons in my tank! Has anyone ever ran out of gas in this thing? How far below E do you have to go to empty this 20 gallon tank?

Thanks,
--Viral

i've also wondered about that! and it's happened to me about twice already, and both times i've ended up filling it up with about 17 gallons!

same here. E for me is usually about 3 gallons left. i get gas whenever the light comes on because i've had the unfortunate experience of actually running out of gas.

Usually 4 gallons for me. Every time I get to E with the little light on, I've tried to go as far as I can go. I always get nervous and fill up with 16-16.5 gallons. One time I got almost 18 gallons in, but that was after a trip to Vegas and I had driven about 365 miles.

Later,

Ray

Keep in mind that your tank houses a bunch of contaminants on the bottom. Reaching low levels may cause some of those comtaminants to get into your engine, which will cause much harm. Mechanics will advise you never to wait until the lights comes on. I always refill at 1/4 the tank about 14.5 gals at the pump. A better example of contaminants...would you fill your car up when you see the gas truck filling up the station?

Ok now thats being way to picky...it's not a lambo...I know a guy running 87 since day one with no problems...so to worry about the truck being there is crazy! I don't know if it's just me but I am too lazy to drive to another place when I see the truck filling.

Is it? I wouldn't risk it going into my car tho. You're just adding more crap to the bottom of your tank tho

On my 05 G35x when the needle is on E, I better pull over. The light comes on around 16-17. But when the needle hits the E, I only have 1 gallon left (dangerous). I am so used to my GM cars that you could push the needle well past E.

If I see the truck there, the only reason I would leave is because it takes so Dang long to pump while they are there. I don' t have time to wait around like that.

I just filled up last night at a gas station that had a truck there and the fillup didn't take unusually long...I don't understand the argument that you should go to another station if there is a fillup truck there. How do you know what kind of gas the station is low on? Isn't there a better chance that the 87 will run out before the higher grades (that we use on the G)?
