Newbie: Transmission issue

Hey Guys and Girls,

I'm a new owner of a 03 G35 coupe M6 and just have a question with regard to the transmission, hopefully you guys can give me some proper advice and answer.
I came from driving a S2000 with a great gearbox, and when I got my G35, I found that it's hard to get into the 5th and 6th gears. Like the transmission is brand new replaced by Infiniti when I brought the car off from them. Is it true that you don't pull to the far right to get into 5th or 6th gear, like you have to adjust it back about 1/2 an inche to the left in order to move into 5th or 6th gear? The dealership told me that all G35 M6 are like that, please advise guys!

Thanks!

Hmmm . . . I usually do not give much more thought than grabbing over to the right and either pushing into 5th or pulling down into 6th. It should be effortless and smooth.

Thanks for your info guys, maybe I should bring it back to the dealership and complain about it because if I pull to the far right, it doesn't allow me to get into 5th or 6th gear. Need to move back left a 1/2 inch. before it allows me to get into gear. The service manager told me it was a poor design and they're all like that, I think he's just B.S. here

I haven't had my tranny replaced(fortunately), but I've read of other people having similar issues when they've replaced their trannies, or gone with aftermarket shifters. I believe the guide plate is a little outta whack, and needs to be realigned. That's just a guess though.

When I shift from 4th to 5th, it's a direct/diagonal shift, with no free play. Exactly as it should be.

Is this happening; if you slide the stick from 4th to 5th does the shifter want to fall into the slot that goes over to reverse?
This is not normal and I got a new transmission due to that same thing; I could not go into 5th as long as there was tension to the right, it was like hitting a sold block at the neautral range, like you said, I had to be carefull and hold it alittle to the middle of that last slot to get 5th... The dealer said it would break in and stop that, but it never did and actually got stuck one day; I had to be towed in and got a new trans the next couple of days... This one ROCKS! It is flawless!!!

Go back and get a tech to drive your car, then go with him and drive another 6MT and show him what is up.

Thanks HTownBoy,
It sounds like the exact situation, but the only thing different is that mine is already replaced with a new tranny. From the response I get from you guys, I think there is still problem with the tranny.
I asked the Service manager to show me with another G35 M6, but he said he doesn't have any in stock, and I told him that it can't be right because if I pull to the far right, it's like hitting a block and doesn't allow any up/down movement unless if you shift back a little to the left. He told me that's the way the G35 tranny was built, which sucks if it is because even a Civic tranny is better... I've made an appointment with Infiniti tmr, I'll keep you guys posted with their answers.

Thanks for all your advices because I'm still new to this car!

I did not want to spend alot of time but I should have told you guys that the bad tranny I was refferring to was the 2nd. one also for me... The first stayed stuck in 6th. gear one day and they told me that was a know issue so it was replaced by that 2nd. one that I wrote about but I knew it was bad when I drove it out of the service dept. due to the exact same thing your describing... The third is suppose to be the newest version used in the new models and it is really nice... I can pull all the paperwork if it may help you; PM me if you want any of that and I will scan it.

Same thing happens to me off and on. Four times total since Nov (car was new in June) with 5300 miles on the coupe. You physically have to lean all your weight into it to get the shifter into 5th. I figured if I broke it I didn't care, its under warranty.

It has also happened to me with 6th gear as well. WTF! It only has 5300 miles!

Just finished going to the dealership and they took it for a test drive and also called Infiniti Canada to confirm that what I'm experiencing is normal for the G35 coupe. They're exact quote is: "No fault found if you allow tran to follow natural path shifting is okay. If you try to over control shifter it is a little hard to go from 4 to 5." They also told me that if you pull to the right and move to the 5th gear, you would experience a block not allowing you to get in gear b/c that's a safety feature for the reverse gear. I was like arguing with the service rep. that what kind of poor design is this tranny, and he said nothing can be done b/c both the tech and infiniti hotline says it's okay.
Makes me wonder the quality of Infiniti now...
