Is 12,000 mile dealer service necessary?

'05 w/11,000; received a notice from Infiniti to schedule 12,000 service with the dealer. I've had no problems with my coupe, 'cept maybe for an intermittent vent rattle that's difficult to recreate except on very particular road sections. What do they service as 12,000 miles?

You don't have to bring it to the dealer as long as you keep the maintenance records.

Ok thanks I get the self-service maintence records vs. the dealer-supplied maintenance part, but is there a benefit to having the dealer perform the service for the $$ they'll charge; what will the do that justifies the expense?

It should actually be 15k. Oil changes are at 3750mile intervals. Dealer says 12k just to make more money.

not at all just keep your service records just in case you have trouble down the road.

I never take my car to the dealer unless it's going to be free or so complex I just don't want to deal with it. A huge chunk of the "service" visits are a waste anyways. Anything that begins with "inspect" is something I don't want to pay for. Inspect coolant level. Inspect tire pressure. Thank you Mr. Dealer for checking my tire pressure, here's $80. What I'm trying to say is that the dealer does nothing you can't do easily enough for 1/8th the price.

If you're on the Infiniti schedule, then service is at 3,750 mile intervals - which means service at 11,250 and then at 15,000. I'm coming up on 11,250 and my dealer says only an oil/filter change is required. Other dealers like to pile on additional stuff. This is all made clear in the owner's manual.
