Unhappy Hit a Toyota Corolla

Specs: 05 6MT Coupe (Black) -- 6 months old.

Last evening I was about to take a right in traffic and bumped into a Toyota Corolla (new one) in front of me. The Toyota was also about to take a right but I accidentally made a move before the car ahead of me. So I hit the Corolla's rear bumper. We pulled over and first thing I checked was the Corolla's rear bumper. Apart from being covered with salt and dirt there was no scratch, no dent. It seemed like I never hit the car. And I did not see anything on my front bumper too.

The owner was a woman who did not even get out of the car to check if there were any significant damages on her side. She asked me for my license, insurance and called the cops. The cop came .. investigated .. ran our licenses .. inspected her car .. and he saw nothing too. We exchanged info. and she drove off. The cop said that the worst that could happen is that she would have to buff the rear Corolla bumper. About $200 or so.

Could I get into bigger trouble? This is my first ever accident. I am freaking out. Could she do more damage to me than what it seems?

Help me out here folks. By the way I do agree that it was totally my fault and I am willing to pay for my mistake but just hope I dont have to pay more than what I actually deserve.

Thanks.

Sorry to hear it. It may not help you, but she did the right thing to protect herself in case there is hidden damage underneath the bumper. Sometimes the bumper cover pops back out and looks fine, but underneath there can be more damage. Were you issued a ticket by the police?

I'll preface this by saying I've no intentions of adding to your anxieties, and I am sorry to hear about your incident.

Don't know where you reside, but having lived in SoCal for the past 6 years I've come across a few individuals who are all too willing to view a minor accident as a potential pay day.

A friend of mine rear-ended a lady coming out of an office complex after she accelerated to turn out but then slammed on her brakes before completing the turn. I got there 10 min later just as they were wrapping up the exchange of insurance information/visual inspection. The lady acted perfectly normal throughout the entire process (as you'd expect anyone involved in a 5 mph accident,) but less than a week later we learned she contacted a lawyer who filed for thousands in damages against the insurance claim. My friend's insurance company ended up settling for $30K which now sits on her record. She was told by her insurance that they suspected, but could not prove fraud.

This contrasts with my own situation in which someone rear-ended me at a red light less than a month after I had just picked up my new A4 Avant. We exchanged information, then called him after I had returned home and told him not to worry because I couldn't see any damage beyond a small scratch on the bumper.

The point is that it can obviously go either way, but I try not to worry because we're all judged by our own words and actions. Eventually karma catches up with everyone, and a person who feels the need to commit fraud for financial gain must be living a life of misery, so I count my blessings that I have so much to be thankful for in my own life.

+1

Not to worry about this too much, but you might want to pay a call to the lady just to see how is it going for her or if there is any intention that she is going to turn this incidence into a "pay-day", if yes, you might better off turn this case towards your insurance ... (but this is really the worst scenario)

Hope this does not happen to me.

You should be fine. My friend hit my G a few weeks ago going probably the same speed as you and all it did was just leave some scratches on my bumper and I took it to a body shop and they buffed it all out for $30.

You guys just don't get this..it is not the damage ...those XXXX are just treating these kinds of accidents of a method of getting money.. I don't wanna talk too much about this, but I have seen too much of this and are disgusted of these kind of people

I have had 2 experiences where I was in an accident similar to yours. The drivers would be ok, say they were ok, and drive off. Both ended up contacting my insurance co. claiming back pain, neck pain, etc....basically trying turn it into a payday. Luckily, they both dropped it eventually, but you can NEVER trust people.

BTW, the first was a couple who seemed to be more concerned with my health rather than theirs (seemed like a very nice couple). The second lady walked out of her car and talked to me for a few minutes. She said that it was nothing and left, but later that day, called my insurancc co. and by me nudging her car at < 5 miles, it caused her to get stomach pains and neck pains.

The bs'ers who "claim" back/neck pain need to be pumped full of 12 gauge buckshot. Seriously though, those that file false lawsuits need to be held financially responsible for lying. That'll cut down on false claims.

I agree with you 100%. The lady's behavior was 100% text book correct. The vast majority of people are honest and simply want to ensure that any car damage that they may have sustained is repaired properly. I am surprised that the cops came. In my area they only come to the scene of the accident when there is personal injury.

I got lucky on this!

Check this out, last summer I was going 75mph in the fast lane of a eight-lane divided highway, following in a long line of traffic, enjoying the day and being a good driver. This idiot comes flying up next to me (passenger side), bobbing and weaving trying to squeeze in somewhere and save himself a millisecond of commute time. Well, I don't let people like that squeeze in front of me, so I tighten up the distance between me and the car in front. So the idiot drops back and then cuts off the car following me and now he's behind me, on my rear bumper. Then, he goes left (I'm in the left-most lane) and proceeds to pass me (at 75mph) on the pull-off lane next to a concrete median barrier. I think "hell-no" so I drift left creating a wedge so he can't pass me in the emergency lane. Well this moron thinks he's the center of the universe and keeps going. It's summer and it's hot and I've got all my windows down, and I hear this scraping and screeching as he keeps coming between me and the concrete barrier! Now that he's hit me, I figure what the hell, so I pull hard left and PINCH his stupid a$$ hard between me and the wall. Now I hear some SERIOUS screeching and scraping and crunching and I'm thinking "I'm so screwed". I let go of him and coast to a stop about 30 yards ahead of him. I look behind and see his hood flipped up and his front left wheel hanging!! Long story short, I call the cops, they come, I tell them how I was trying to get off the highway cause this guy was freaking me out all the while he was trying to pass me on the emergency pull-off lane. I did get a ticket for failure to use my turn signal ($80) but got the satisfaction of squashing a punk driver. His car was hammered between me and the wall, and the only thing wrong with my car was a scrape along the driver and rear passenger doors. My car is 12 years old and full of scratches etc., so I didn't really care.

He tried to sue me for back problems etc., but after talking with my insurance rep about the incident, they concluded he was full of it and denied paying any $$ to him or his insurance co. It wasn't a violent collision, it was pretty smooth and gently de-cellerating. Just got crunched between my car and a concrete wall Hahahahahahahahahaaaa...........

Now, I realize how STUPID I was for even doing what i did. I wouldn't recommend it or try it again. The outcome could have been very different and I may not have been so lucky. But me and my friends still have a good laugh about it now and then.
