just a quick question... i just got my oil changed with mobile one synthetic... how long should i wait to get it changed again??? the manual says 3750 more miles... the maintenance ppl said 6000 more miles... any suggestions???

Actually, the "normal" service interval is 7500 miles. The 3750 mile oil change interval is for what are usually referred to as "severe" conditions, i.e., lots of stop and go driving, lots of short trips, driving in dusty conditions, or towing. As long as you don't frequently operate your G under one or more of the aformentioned conditions the 7500 mile interval is just fine, particularly if you're using a synthetic like Mobil 1.

Here's something to think about. Most dealerships make a heck of a lot more money from servicing cars than they do from selling them. You don't really think that very much of that $70 to $120 per hour labor charge is going into the pockets of the mechanics and service writers, do you? Dealers have every reason to encourage you -- whether via scare tactics or less insidious means -- to get your car serviced as frequently as possible whether it's really necessary or not. For them there's no downside. Unless the service techs are incompetent, more frequent maintenance won't hurt your vehicle and may even help it, but no matter what it will transfer a lot more of your hard earned $$ from your pocket into the dealership's coffers. If your car genuinely needs more frequent service then by all means get it done, but for many of the people who think they need to change their oil more frequently, it's just not necessary.

Anyone who changes their synthetic oil more frequently than 7500 miles is throwing their money away. The oil change interval on $100K+ Porsches is now around every 20K miles. Now why would Porsche have such a long interval for their oil changes? Certainly they wouldn't lose any sales if the interval were every 7K miles, and the extra business would be great for their Dealerships. So maybe it's because they really believe that the extra oil changes are unnecessary. Always be aware of the source, when evaluating the quality of information regarding oil changes.

On the other hand if you want to change oil more frquently, go ahead since it's your money.

 

I agree wholeheartedly there's no need to change synthetic oil more frequently, or even as frequently, as 7500 miles. (The filter is another matter -- that should be changed at least every 7500 miles, regardless of what kind of oil you use.) However, what is necessary for your vehicle and what is required under the terms of the warranty are two different things. In the unlikely event your engine suffers an internal component failure and you are unable to prove -- via receipts and/or credible maintenance records -- that you changed your oil at least every 7500 miles, there's a good chance that Infiniti will not cover the repair under your warranty.

 

after the first change to syn, i would still change it at 7500 as there's
dino oil still in the motor.

the next time, i would go maybe 12k or one year. but if you use the
15k synth (gold top) you can perhaps take it up to 15k. regardless,
change it once a year.

dino oil i go by milage or 6months.
synth oil i go by age (1 yr).

hmmm, from this thread I feel quite fine in changing every 5000 miles. Is it overkill, possibly but then again I drive over 1000 miles a week to work, in both city (Cincinnati, lots of hills and stop and go) and highway (from Lexington to Cinci). There is constant road construction on I-75 so the formentioned condition do apply. Of course I don't drive the 101 where it takes 4 hrs to go 5 miles. Also since I do have the dealer change my oil and filter they charge me only $20 for the change + cost of supplies. That might be why I have such a good relationship with my dealer and they have NO PROBLEM what so ever with my mods. I suspect that the constant contact with the dealership and knowing everyone there in service cuts me a large amount of slack when I encounter any little issue. Also being in service every 5-6 weeks for an hour or two allows for all the updates to be applied and catch little things before they become big.

Ive been using mobile one Synth since my car hit 15k miles and its about to hit 30k miles soon... i love the oil... i change mine every 5k miles even thought when i change the oil its always the SAME color as when i first had put it in...

 

I change my synthetic every 5k. Yeah, it's overkill, but the small cost is worth the added benefit. Just my .02.

 

I use M1 in all my cars and change it every 6000, but I change the filter every 3K. 7.5K with the filter at 3750 is what I plan to do for our new G.

 

Same here around 5k with M1. How do you change the filter without changing the oil? Maybe in other cars, don't think you can do that in a G without making a mess.

 

FYI, Google does conversions! Just type "7500 miles in km". The result is

7 500 miles = 12 070.08 kilometers

but then again i only drive 2,500ish miles/year ^_^
