Question for the '06 Automatic Owners. Shifting RPM question at 80MPH

Hey,

For those of you who have '06 Automatic Coupe..

Today when I was driving, I noticed my RPMs were higher than usual at 80mph. It is usually at 3000 rpm, this is what I thought when I first got my car, but today it was around 3500rpm. Car was already warmed up also. I couldn't tell if it was in 4th gear or not, should be in 5th by now. I think that is how it was when I got the car at that speed. I only have 3000 miles on it. When I put it to Steptronic Mode at 80mph, it shows in 4th gear and the RPMs shoot up. But then I can shift to 5th and its back to 3500 on 5th gear. In all other gears and speeds, when shifting to steptronic, it shows the current gear. Don't know why it shows 4th gear when I am at 80mph, even though it is in 5th gear. When I go to steptronic at 80mph, it goes to 4th gear and RPM goes up, which is normal.

But my question was, for those of you with 06, what RPMs is your car at when you are going exactly 80mph? Is it at 3000rpm or 3500rpm? Also, when you shift to Steptronic at 80mph, does automatically downshift to 4th gear or does it stay in 5th gear? Could someone please try this and let me know asap...

I don't know if my car is shifting to 5th gear properly or not. Please let me know your feedback. Thanks!

thanks man...could you check your RPMs at 80mph out for me before I go to the dealer...thanks!

for the downshifting, but when I am going under 80mph, if i switch to steptronic, it doesn't downshift..it shows the gear I am currently in. Does it downshift automatically after you are above a certain MPH?

The tranny will shift to high gear (5th) at about 40mph (if you're not accellerating). Once it's in 5th gear and you go to manumatic, it automatically shows and goes to 4th gear.
Anything under about 40 mph, when shifting to manumatic, it will show the gear that the tranny is in...

If you're doing 60 mph (and not accellerating) -- shifting to manumatic should automatically put the tranny into 4th gear.
Same with 50 mph.

C.

Anytime you are over 40-50 mph and not accelerating you are prolly in 5th and it will downshift to 4th when you switch over. At 80 mph cruising it will defn drop to fourth from fifth gear when you switch. At first I thought that it was stupid cuz all other manumatics I had didnt do it. But now I love it, the main reason you would put it in manumatic when cruising around is only to accelerate immediately and it delivers just that.

I know you're asking for an 06, but an 05 have the exact same wheels, tires, rear gear, and tranny, and mine is a hair above 3k at 80mph. If your car isn't totally warmed up, the torque converter won't lock up so that the engine can run at a higher rpm and thus allow it to warm up faster. That maybe what you're experiencing.
