Burning rubber smell?

My 04 sedan which I bought earlier this year with 29k also has the burning rubber smell. It's white and ever since I bought it I noticed that on the leading edge of the doors and gas cap a slight brown tint that wash's off, but always comes back. The strongest burning rubber smell I've had came after exiting the car on a recent hour drive with the heater on. I didn't notice the smell during the summer and wonder if it has something to do with the ac/heater.
Anybody else experience this?
