4000 Rpm

GUys,
Do I really need to keep it under 4000 for 1200 miles. Is it ok to go higher every now and then. From the old school of doing this break in thing alot of people said open it up at first to get the most from the engine, is this too old school?

The car will feel slow for the first 1000 miles.. don't push it too hard .. after 1000+ miles you will feel that the car is actually going faster and getting better gas mileage.. Then get an oil change and start driving hard.
This sounds like the logical way to do it...
If it sounds more logical to hit redline with a brand new engine to get the best out of it, then hit the redline everytime..

yes keep it under 4K ... but its not holy grail if you go to 5K .... but dont make a habit out of it... I know the temptation and I could not keep it under 4k as well.... but believe me its only a matter of a month or so and you will be much happier after that.

I didnt keep it under 4000 and i have 9000 miles now and its running stronger than ever. With newer cars nowadays you dont have to break the engine in, it's already done. I'd go the old school way if you want to get the most from it.

I dont think thats a fair statement... cause the manual clearly states and highly recommends you to work on the break in period.

this is an on-going arguement that has been around for a long time. You can follow the manual and not go over 4000 rpm's for the first 1200 miles but if you do go over 4000 rpm's and push the car hard constantly during the first 1200 miles it's NOT going to hurt the car. Of course if you redline the car every time you drive it then that's a different story. Its just like the debate that you shouldnt use full synthetic oil until 10-15,000 miles. I changed to full-syn at 2000 miles, now at 9000 miles and no problems.

Well, look at it this way: It's like that old statement, "It's called a recession when your neighbor can't find a job but is called a depression when you can't find a Job". In other words, not matter what happens, it is always worse when it happens to you. So, when others push their cars hard for the first 1200 miles and nothing happens, it's ok...Unitl it happens to you. Use your own judgement and do what YOU think is right. I for one am following what is the majority rule here: I didn't push it hard for the first 1200 miles and so far...no problems at all. IN fact, I don't even have those annoying rattles everyone is complaining about. However, I do have some issues (That is for another thread). No clicking of the axle, it just feels good.

I guess the only way to look at it is this: What is the worse-case-scenerio for doing either one? That is your answer.

what do you think the lot guys did to the car when they got them in? or what the techicians did when they were getting the cars ready for sale? i used to work at a VW/Subaru dealership. and i know first hand when every STi came in, it was ran hard. same thing went for the R32 when it came in.

Sure, the occasional trip to 5 or 6k is fine, don't worry about it.
Just don't do it all the time, but more importantly, don't do steady speeds-- vary your speeds on the hwy.

Best thing to break in an engine is to drive it in town where you're contunually varying speed.

G/L and enjoy.

So when I talk to my parents on the phone,
I'm gonna tell them that I need a new warranty and the ONLY way to get the new warranty is to get 06 ?
