PDA with GPS..... Smart Choice?

I posted this post up on freshalloy... but I want some of your thoughts and opinions. I have always wanted the Navigation for my car, but didnt get it this time around on my car, so I was thinking... What if I used the new HP Ipaq 5455 along with the accessory GPS? Is it worth the 300 - 400 bundle for us who dont have the stock GPS? Also, I am not into any of the Garmin items like the iQue 3600 or any of them.. I mean the Garmin iQue is alright, but the other items arent... Give me feedback if possible( I will also be custom fitting it into my car with a custom holder on the dash and the whole works )

I have PDA with the Pharos GPS and it is ok, but the PDA just can't hold enough in memory to work well. I would save my money. I wish I had.

Re: PDA with GPS..... Smart Choice?

I think it's a stretch to think a PDA even with a 256MB upgrade will be able to be even remotely as detailed as a 7.8G unit universally, but for one specific location, I'm sure it should be fine. For example, I just sat in my car, plugged in the name of a hotel in Florida, and it found it for me. I then plugged in a friend's address in Memphis as a waypoint, and it did it. I had everything set to go, and was able to accurately tell how long the trip would take, etc. We even planned on places to eat along the way, and it would warn me when I needed gas and would direct me to the closest station.

OEM would be, in my opinion, the way to go, but if you're staying in one area and like to watch slideshows while you drive ( Rambo), I think it could be a welcome addition to your car's decor. I've got a Sony Clie Pen-NR series with cam, so it'd be nice to round it out with GPS, but the techno-geek in my brain can't convince the financier that it's a useful decision

Good luck with your install-- Have you thought of Palm OS, or are you a Win CE person? What're the pros and cons of each?

&700 is too much for me... And Yes I will be staying in California so I dont think that would be much of a problem for me.... Right now, Im debating on whether I should get the Garmin iQue or a Ipaq 5455 with a gps receiver....

Actually, NAVtech data is NAVtech data. I have all the same speed and direction (one ways/ramps) info on streets that the OEM has. In fact, mine is much newer as I have the lastest quarter data released. I'm able to keep 3-4 states on my PDA at any time, most PDA maps are highly compressed. During my G35S test drive, my PDA was much more detailed. Thats sad...

The only thing you have on the DVD based NAV is little icons for some buildings and alot more POIs. I have the basic hotels, parks and restaurants.

Re: PDA with GPS..... Smart Choice?

Oh, I forgot to add... While my PDA has the same data, NAVtech licenses the data differently. All the sub-300 software has a 2 million population limit for detailed maps. OEMs navs do not have this.

Last year this was a rather crippling issue with Navtech PDA solutions (there are 2 other mapping providers). However, most PDA programs now dynamically swap out maps... so if you route through an area with more than 2 million people, it will handle whatever is needed to done without you worrying about it.. last year tho, getting around a heavily populated area was a big PITA..

Re: PDA with GPS..... Smart Choice?

The POI feature is the one I use most often. For example, I was on the road and thought "I need to stop by Pep Boys", so I just put in "pep" and it found the closest one to me. My friends often call and tell me what restaurant/bar we're meeting in, and I just plug it in if I've not heard of it.

If I were in a sales position and was using a company car w/o OEM Navi, I'd definitely do this. Seeing as you're given street addresses, it'd be incredibly handy. Being able to take it with me to a different city and use it in a rental car, etc. would be great. Since I just go on road trips or find places I've never been most of the time, OEM's the one for me. For some reason, the only place it's not been able to find is Good Will in Nashville. My friend needed to go there, and we couldn't figure out why a $30-40K car couldn't find a Good Will

Re: PDA with GPS..... Smart Choice?

I use an IPAQ 3635 with a compact flash sleeve, and a 512 mb cf card. I have a Paros GPS serial antenna, and I use Routis GPS software. The combination is pretty good, but doesn't even come close to the system that Hertz uses in the rental fleet (Magellan 750). http://www.magellangps.com/en/produc...sp?DATAID=8064 The display wasn't great, but the POI's were excellent.

You can get more info on PDA GPS solutions at http://www.gpspassion.com

Re: PDA with GPS..... Smart Choice?

gpspassion rocks. There's a TON of info to sift through.

to summarize, you want Mapopolis Navigator, Routis, PocketMap Navigator or TomTom.

You want any GPS (CF or BT) that uses the newer Star II/LP chipset. Thats VERY important and will make or break your GPS usefulness..

Personally, I really like this
http://www.semsons.com/holuxgps.html
or save a few bucks and get it all at once
http://www.semsons.com/holcfgpsprec.html

I use an Ipaq 3955.

this is a good place to start.

While all this seems like a pain in the a$$, well it is.. But you also have email and eWallet and all the other things a PDA is for you as well as great nav. No, its not as simple as popping out the OEM Nav, but thats not the topic there (not PDA or OEM Nav).

I've gotten so used to my PDA Nav that I really dont feel like I'm missing anything without the OEM nav. But thats because of my specific needs.

Tell me what you want to do (palm or ppc, BT or CF), I'll steer you in the right direction.
