"The G35's bumpers are a disaster," says Lund. "Infiniti engineers attached an additional metal plate to the center of the rear bumper reinforcement bar to improve the car's performance in the pole test, but it didn't make much difference. There was extensive damage to body panels including a crushed trunk lid and floor pan."

Re: G35 Bumper Test by IIHS
I HOPE this isn't a sign of the car's overall safety. Safety is really really important to me in a car and the only reason I thought this car was acceptably safe was because the NHTSA gave the 350Z 5 out of 5 stars (driver) and 4 out of 5 stars (front passenger) on their test...was I wrong to assume that the G35C would be similarly as safe??

HeyMrE! I don't know if your've looked in the this thread "My G got hit and run". There is a pic of a G that got rear ended by a speeding SUV and from the looks of it the G took the hit pretty well. The trunk is smashed but that's what crumple zones are for.

There are a few people on here that have been in MAJOR accidents (T-boned by a semi, head-on into barriers, etc.) and all have lived to tell. I only know of one person who suffered any major injury... There was also a G on Ebay a while ago that had rolled god knows how many times, had damage to every panel, and the interior was still pristine and well reinforced. I was recently in an accident as well, and I've got to say, I feel safer in the G than any other car I've ever been in. The new FX even scored higher in crash safety than the Volvo SUVs... when you score higher than Volvo, you know you're safe. Just my opinion; others are welcome.

Re: G35 Bumper Test by IIHS
It's not an indication of the car's overall safety. Look who's doing the test.. the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. They do crash tests on cars that go beyond federal standards. They're funded by the insurance industry. Their primary interest is in cars that cause less $$$ damage in collisions. This is inline with consumer safety, however.. as medical bills far outweigh property damage, so they do the 40mph offset tests to see how well the passenger cage survives and prevents injury.
The bumper test is done to see which cars have major $$$ damage in minor fender benders. They are pushing for standars to have Zero (or negligible) damage in 5mph collisions, I believe. This would be a good thing, IMO. The current federal standard is a mere 2.5mph.
A busted bumper is not an indicator of an unsafe car. The bumper is supposed to deform to absorb the impact. It would be nice if it just didn't give way quite so quickly. However, in a major collision, our cars hold up pretty well. DJRezin8, one of our members here, was hit by a semi truck, tore his G35 sedan apart, and he lived to tell the tale.

Re: G35 Bumper Test by IIHS
Wow, good results. As for it being low-speed impact, I can completely agree that I'd rather have my bumper absorb the shock and crumple than have the car jar in its entirety. That's what leads to whiplash, back problems, etc. I was recently in a head-on altercation, and the bumper crumpled, the hood got a small fold, but neither myself nor the passanger recalls it being a "jarring" experience in anyway.
