540i???

My friend has a 01' 540i AT and all of my other friends keep saying how he'll beat me in a race cause of all the torque he has. Well, I believe in the amount of torque it has, but weight and other factors play a part also. Anyone race against one?

Re: 540i???

i pick up my car anytime within the next three days, my choice. it is a mt.

i've been driving mt's for years now. however, i have never had powerful cars so i never tried a REAL fast start. like if i was a track and was being timed.

what is the theory for starting fast with an MT

Re: 540i???

The stock 540 will be a good match for the G35. If you are a good driver, the 6MT should edge him out. If you're not but he is (less mistakes possible with A/T) he will probably win.

The statistics say you should take him:

BMW 540I A/T
0-30 mph 2.10 s
0-40 mph 3.70 s
0-50 mph 4.90 s
0-60 mph 6.30 s
0-70 mph 8.70 s
0-80 mph 10.80 s
0-90 mph 13.40 s
0-100 mph 17.70 s
(1/4 mile) 15.00 s @ 92.6 mph

Re: 540i???

I own both a 540 & G35C and it will be a close race - I wouldn't race for pink slips if I were you!
Both are great cars, but very different. The G35C is a pure sports car that can challenge cars with V8's; the 540 can keep up with sports cars in power and handling, and do it with 4 doors & passengers & groceries, in quiet comfort, smooth ride, and much more luxury than the G.
In a related topic, these BMW comparisons seem to come up a lot on this board. There are frequently discussions about whether the G can beat a BMW 330 or 540, etc. First of all, I would say that any 540 will easily beat a 330. So, if people now feel the G can give a 540 a run for its money, there should never be a question about the G out running a 330. It would!!

Re: 540i???

thanks for the replies. Went out for a run with my friend with the 540i and I started pulling on him from 65+ on the freeway but he later said that he wasnt pressing the pedal all the way(i think it's bs) but oh well. Maybe some time in the future, we'll see. =)
