Steering wheel wearing out???

Have any of you started to get wear in your steering wheel and shift ****? Cause I have, right at the top of the steering wheel and on the shift ****, right below the metal label. I have a 6MT with the graphite interior. Please tell me this is not normal after only 5,000 miles. And can this be replaced under warranty as a part defect of some sort? Anyone else with this problem or answers would be great to hear from. Thanks in advance

How often do you clean and condition your leather? What do you use? The only car we've gotten wear like this one was my sister's, and she didn't clean/condition the leather on her wheel or shift-****.

Davey, try to take GeoBau's advice..... try some Lexol cleaner and then condition, they are supposed to work well for the threads on the steering wheel as well.

Re: Steering wheel wearing out???

I don't think that conditionning the leather is a factor here since he had his car for only 5000 miles. I think it has more to do with the quality of the leather in those area of the car.

davey2003 - My brother's Lexus had some very little wear in the driver side seat after about a year and the dealer fixed it for free. It was supposedly under waranty. Unfortunetly, I have no idea about Infiniti. Your best bet is to go to your dealership and ask them. If Lexus is doing it, I don't see why Infiniti would not for such little thing as shift **** and steering wheel. Good luck.

Re: Steering wheel wearing out???

Thanks for the info and comic relief. I wish I had a death grip. Anyways, I do clean and condition the leather about every 1-2weeks. I use the Meguiers 2 step product. Good to hear that someone was able to get it replaced under warranty somewhere, even if it wasn't at infiniti. Thanks for the input. Let you guys know how it turns out at the dealer.

Re: Steering wheel wearing out???

get your windows tinted. if your in cali you can tint the front windows with a legal tint. and dont forget to tint the top of your windshield as well. this all helps to keep your steering wheel leather in one piece.

Re: Steering wheel wearing out???

whoa, you condition your leather every 2 weeks? There is your problem. You can soften the leather too much. I've heard of similiar problems with seats that are over conditioned.

Re: Steering wheel wearing out???

I have the same problem. The leather on my steering wheel is worn and lighter colored in some areas (oddly, the areas that I don't touch, like the bottom of the steering wheel). Have about 9k miles, and aside from when I first got the car I haven't applied any conditioner to the leather. The wear has been visible since about 3000 miles.

Re: Steering wheel wearing out???

I usually try to park facing North (is that nerdy?) because it tends to keep discoloration of the dash and wear of the leather down. If I can't choose N, then W in the morning and E in the evening. If it means backing in to a spot that I'll be in for a few hours, why not?

You may just have an anomoly for a steering wheel... our Durango has that slightly- after 3 years, though, and untinted front window. It's more heat-related than anything else in that case... could that be your prob?

Re: Steering wheel wearing out???

I use one of the custom fit winshield shades

Fits great no UV and keeps the temp down

Alot easier than parking in a certain direction plus if you tint the front, makes it weird to look out front

Have a healthy day!

LOL, FD, it's not that bad. If I pull into a lot, I either pull into or back into a spot, and only if I'll be in there for at least an hour. I'm not that bad about it, hehe... it's the easiest and fastest way to protect your dash.

Re: Steering wheel wearing out???

From what I understand, you can't condition leather too often cause then you clog the pores. It should be like 2 or 3 times a year. Lexol is pretty good and with time you don't have to apply as much.
