Re: Stick vs Auto
Very impressive auto tranny we have here un like the 330 bimmer with 7 second 0-60 times and over 15 quarters as compared to a very competitive manual tranny or SMG. We get the Q auto trans in the G which is one reason i bought this car. The thing is not as smooth as a bmw and the triptronic sucks but you can prob put 450 hp through this motor and never worry about a thing.

This is also another reaon I like this car. My old J30 had the lighter 300ZX tranny and was prone to failure due to being overworked on the heavier J
The Q tranny can handle the weight and the HP so I feel th auto tranny should be somewhat bulletproof with proper care
As to auto vs manual. Rememeber that to most of us this is a regular car so personal convenience is a must. I chose a auto due to the fact that the wife cannot drive stick and the autos now adays are so much like a stick of old that there is little diff.
If this is a fun car then you have to decide for your self. For most no one would be able to tell the difference in speed between a manual or auto. The control thing is totally different as there is much more driving control when pushing the car with a manual.
Have a healthy day!

Re: Stick vs Auto
I thought the numbers were stating that the 6MT was .5 second faster than the auto. Also the latest on the 6MT Sedan say it's only .1 or .2 slower than the 6MT Coupe. This would make the Sedan 6MT faster than an auto coupe.
No need to jump my **** if you disagree, I'm just stating what I read in some mags.

Re: Stick vs Auto
The fastest 0-60 times that forum members have been gettin on the 5A Coupe is 6.02 seconds, and the fastest times for the 6MT is 5.3 or 5.4 seconds. Personally, I think the difference is marginal...don't let 0-60 times make your decision, because automatic transmissions are so quick now that you won't really feel the 0-60 difference between the two transmissions.

Re: Stick vs Auto
Very important distinction to make here:
The 6MT is a good .5 seconds faster than the 5AT in 0-60 and about .6 seconds faster in the 1/4 mile.
However, the 6MT is only about .25 seconds faster than the 5MM (5AT's "manumatic mode") in the quarter mile. I would bet my car that the 5MM has a faster 0-60 than the 5AT too (probably splitting the difference between 6MT and 5AT again), but that's not what the magazines test because conventional wisdom is that AT cars are faster if you just leave them in "D." But with respect to the 2003 G35 Coupe at least, that's definitely wrong. I've yet to hear anybody get a 5AT quarter mile time that's even within .15 seconds of his best 5MM time.
I strongly suspect that the 5AT's computer control is poorly tuned, and that's the reason 5MM is better. As others have said, the transmission itself is high quality, same one as the Q45. I'm curious to see if the 2004 5ATs can do better than the 2003s, or if they have the same quirk that requires manumatic driving. Which is not a bad problem to have really, as it gives you even more justification to play with the tiptronic, it's just a little disappointing to know that my car would be even faster than its 5MM times if the computer wasn't such a nanny.

Re: Stick vs Auto
Well, keep in mind that, once people figure out that the manual mode is faster, they stop trying to improve their automatic times. So the "MM" times represent the best runs from a larger sample, whereas the AT times are a smaller sample, and those mainly from first handful of runs on the first day unless the driver doesn't try the manual shift. But yeah, even .15, which is the closest I've seen, is a substantial difference. That's about the same as carrying an extra passenger.
I doubt the published 0-60 time for the automatic is in manual mode. That would mean the MM actually starts catching up to the 6MT over the 1/4 mile stretch, which should be impossible given the taller gearing and extra drivetrain loss.

Re: Stick vs Auto
Auto's can be made faster if you can get a high-stall installed. I have read that on LS1 and LT1 Camero's and Firebirds with hight stalls the car get more tq faster.
On moreof a note related to us. Audi auto S4 apprently claim there is a chip that makes their auto work faster and triptronic work more efficetivly while helping milage improve by 1mpg.
