Anyone have a bike rack on their sedan?

I need a bike rack to haul 2 road bikes around but DO NOT want the kind that hangs on the trunk. I would like the kind that goes on the roff.

I looked at the car today and don't see any attachment points like I had on my Audi. So I thought I would ask here before I go on a search.

I had put a yakima rack on mine, and installed it without the fairing, but it was NOISY!!! I ended up putting a Saris Bones on the back instead.

I have a Thule roof rack for my surfing and snowboarding needs. It does a good job and it fits the little identations in the door frame perfectly (which would probably be the closest thing to attachment points)

I also had a Yakima rack on mine...but with the fairing. As posted, without it, it was noisy, but with the fairing, it wasn't too bad (except when I opened the sunroof).

I've had the rack on for about 2 yrs, but I just noticed there are slight indentations at the top of the door openings. On the rear doors, these indentations would be perfect for the Yakima clips, but on the front, the indentations are too rearward.

By the way, I actually thought the rack w/ the fairing made the sedan a lot sportier when viewed from the front.

I was looking at the Yakima and the Thule on line last night and it appears the Yakima is a tad cheaper as well as fits better on the car with the specific clips made for the car. I didn't see that on the Thule rack.

But is one rack really better than the other?

I have the Thule rack (fit kit #2118) and it fits the roof indentations perfectly. I also believe the OEM accessory you can buy from Infiniti is just a rebadged Thule.

[edit: I don't see the Infiniti rack in the current accessories catalog, but I know it was offered for my 2004 sedan]

I bought the Thule rack because the parts that attach to the door frame are dipped in some rubber compound. The Yakima kit had you put some stickers on the fit kit itself (I thought it did anyway).

Anybody have pics of these on their car? Are these typically safe for the paint and car (i.e. dents, dings, scratches)?

Thanks

help me on this: doesn't even the best fitting kit scratch up your paint anyway?

there was a thread on this topic about 18 months ago and I think someone was going to actually install a hitch rack..

A good, quality rack should fit nice without scratching any paint. Nice ones aren't cheap, though. They also look ugly when not in use and can damage the paint if crud gets underneath the pads. You might want to try putting the bikes in the trunk. Lay down something to prevent grease stains and get quick release skewers for both wheels. You can put the tires in trash bags and throw them in the back seat.
